“Just a Stamp Please:” New Bangkok Immigration by Jack Dawson

I saw Phil (blogging as Jack Dawson) a few weeks ago, on Soi 4 as usual, and he seemed the same as always. Never in many years saw any indication of a physical illness as he walked and golfed a lot, and seemed in good shape.

Shocking news to me.

UFC 121 Preview by Young Penfold

The Chao Phraya has a fast current this week. I’m looking forward to reading your UFC 122 preview, so how about letting UCW select an alternative punishment for your missed call on the main event. Maybe strolling into Soi Africa wearing only a diaper.

I know little about MMA, but both Valasquez and Pacquiao both make a point that speed often trumps size.

My New Bike by Werewolf

Did you invest in a mirror for your bike? Might be a good idea to watch for the little green buses that let nothing get in their way in their quest to pick up a passenger on the side of the road.

Pooden is right about the elevated walkway between the QS and Lumpini Parks. But unless you’re Tony Hawk, you will need to walk your bike up and down the 2 stairways over Soi 4 and the Expressway.

Phra Padaeng is a beautiful and calming place to ride. Just take care not to ride off the elevated wooden path (swampy land below with maybe a snake or ten), or get lose your way back.

Current is quite strong today in the Chao Phraya. How about UCW picks an alternative punishment for your erroneous prediction, so that you can continue writing future UFC previews.

You might not always predict the winners, but I like the color you put in your previews.

10 things I hate about Bangkok – Part 7 by On Nutter

Most sequels (movie and books) usually deteriorate in quality, but OnNutters lists are consistently a great read. Reminds me of another former Bangkok expat quipper, Phil Williams.

And the Lurcher also added equally funny reads.

A Week in Angeles City – Part Five

Entertaining series on your visit to AC, with spot-on observations of the girls, bars, and other punters.

Cebu Pacific certainly provides the worst customer service of any large business I have dealt with. Can’t believe I have flown at least 20 legs with them.

Some early-era names I have encountered in AC bars:

Nancy, Myra, Hazel, Betty, Carmen, Mitch, Evelyn, Ruth, Jean, Mona, Wanda, Marilyn . . .

Guys are worse, Romeo is a popular name, and the mayor of AC who posts his name on any surface, mobile or stationary, is Blueboy Nepo.

Their still are Viet girls in Phnom Penh night spots, but the numbers and quality are way down from 6 years past.

There is a hostess bar on Street 108 that has an all-Viet staff.

My 1-2 sim works both in Cambodia and the Philippines, but the roaming charges are quite high.

Bought a $5 USD sim card in Phnom Penh, and a 40 pesos Sim in the Philippines.

A Week in Angeles City – Part One

Good summary of the AC bar scene and prices.

I was also recently in AC. A day or 2 before Halloween, my friend and I are chatting up a cute door girl. She met my friend’s criteria for a size S with a cute face, so he immediately asked her about barfining that night.

She told my friend that she has menustration, so he dejectedly moved inside the bar with me.

About 30 minutes later she has changed clothes and we see her leaving with a reputed ‘bad boy’. No doubt her ‘menustration excuse’ was a ruse to avoid going with my friend, who is a well-known expat living in the Philippines.

Bob Arum, Boxing promoter on MMA:

“UFC are a bunch of skinhead white guys watching people in the ring who also look like skinhead white guys. . . . ”

“Ninety percent of the people in the audience wear tattoos . . .”

“It’s horrible. Guys rolling around like homosexuals on the ground . . .”

Sounds like he is describing PMMP’s head on YM’s body.

Boxing’s popularity has been decreasing for a long time due to corruption, cheating, and poor organization.

I don’t really follow MMA, but it seems their popularity is soaring.

I wonder how their total revenues (gate and broadcast) are now comparing to boxing, and do the MMA promoters ‘manage’ their sport better than the boxing promoters?

Great deal for the FL girls, but so hard to change their habits and trolling areas.

I recall the outdoor Beergarden on Walking Street setting up nice incentives to get the girls off Walking Street to hang out in the Beergarden, and they just wouldn’t come, despite aggressive promotion by the bar owners.

Good on you for trying.

SSB: Others I know who have studied Thai at AUA complained about the methodology of learning while only listening, without talking and having the benefit of speaking Thai and getting feedback on pronunciation, etc. However, it sounds like the schedule (and female students) suits your needs; and some students like this teaching method.

YP: Interesting comment about the missionaries ability to speak Thai. A few years ago, I ran into some Mormon missionaries in Ubon Ratchathani, who told me they receive intensive foriegn language training for 8 weeks before traveling to thir post.

The Mormon foreign language institute is highly regarded. However, the missionaries told me much of their vocabulary focuses on religion.

The largest Thai girl I went with (from Pattaya beer bar) told me (she volunteered, I didn’t ask) she was 82 kilos . . . but she had every gram moving.

About a year later, I ran into her in the Bamboo Bar on Soi 3, and she looked even larger. She did find her target clientele though.

Thai media (and law enforcement) shows definitely less constraint than the mainstream western media.

I recall the local Thai news ‘recreating’ the rape of a 15 year old girl – by having the accused actually lay on top of the victim . . . while a crowd of onlookers and media watched.

Try that in Europe or the USA.

‘Concerning her pregnancy, Ms Orobator told the Lao authorities she conspired with another prisoner, Mr John Watson, to secretly obtain his sperm, which she used to impregnate herself.’

And these genuises expect concerned officials to believe this 20 year old girl has the equipment and knowledge of procedures required to perform artifical insemination.

It has to be obvious that a prison official, or another prisoner, delivered the semen in the old-fashioned way. Upon birth, it should be obvious who provided the semen.

Getting Good Oral Service, Shopping For Dresses, And Avoiding Tuberculosis In Bangkok by gavinmac

Humorous and entertaining post. Your description of DGD’s personality (“Door Girl Dullard didn’t speak, didn’t smile, didn’t kiss, didn’t make physical contact, didn’t make eye contact, and didn’t express emotion of any kind. She was a lot like a mannequin”) was great!

Good info on the dental work for those who are looking into this. I did this once, but cannot stay away from colaa and teaa, so these drinks offset the whitening procedure. Of course, we still tell the ladies that semen helps lighten their skin, and keeps their teeth pearly white.

The detailed dental procedure did not bother me, but I did wince at the thought of another spoiled bargirl collecting 2 grey notes for playing the zombie. Provides clear evidence why more Thai BGs expect high tips for continually providing poor service.

1st timers review of Q Bar by Canadian Boy

CanBoy – Great Piece – your character descriptions made this submission a great read for me.

A couple of years ago, my friend and I were dragged into the Q Bar by a former BM LD girl, and her younger sister. The friend, myself, and younger sister immediately hated the place, but older sister seemed to be in her preferred environment – hiso Thais and farangs, most under 30 years old.

Young sister and I escaped out to the all night karaoke place (below the disco) on Petchaburi, and proceeded to empty a bottle of JW Red at a bargain price.

There is an obvious market clientele for QBar as they had a good crowd that night, but it certainly is not for me.

ON – Even though it is unlikely you and BBB will get refunds or any compensation other than the take away meal, at least Cebu and the TA appeared to be make some response to making some amends.

My TA just curtly says “Cebu hasn’t sent refund yet, call again next month”. Of course, the TA has already been compensated, why should they make any effort to secure a refund for a customer? Maybe to provide after-sales service to a customer – nah, not in Thailand.

BBB – sorry for confusing you with that other bad boy.

BBK – Nice report on Pattaya, especially the prose on Soi 6, which in my opinion, is Thailand’s best P4P value.

Cebu Pacific is the worst airline – actually the worst business – I have ever dealt with. They rarely answer their phones, never answer website inquiries (they don’t have an email address), and won’t accept credit cards issued from outside the Philippines for online ticket purchases. When you are able to talk with CP staff at the airport offices, they contradict themselves, and make no attempt to resolve problems they create. WTF have I trusted them to ship my a$$ over the Pacific Ocean? – Only so I don’t have to land in Manila, and travel overland to AC.

Did you purchase your ticket thru a Bkk Travel Agent, or directly from Cebu Pacific? I purchased a ticket for a Cebu flight last November that was cancelled (due to the Bkk airport closure), and still have not received a refund. Cebu told me the TA was responsible for the refund, and the TA says they cannot refund the money to me until Cebu sends them the money. I know I will never see this refund, but I like to continue pestering them on principle.

Kat – The direct bill from the Bangkok MEA is usually just over 3 baht per unit. However, most apt. owners charge the tenants between 5 and 8 baht per unit. This charge is usually spelled out in a lease, but get the landlord to specify what this is if not in writing. Make an effort to look at the meters, and never trust landlords not to f*ck you on utility charges. My last monthly electric bill (direct from MEA) was about 360 baht; but I was out of town for about 10 days and only average about 4 hours a day of A/C. My water is billed at 18 baht a unit (a typical charge), and averages about 180 baht a month.

Buses – I actually prefer bus transport (both within Bkk and inter provincial) to hi-speed, stomach-churning taxi rides. The occasional BGs who tell me they commute by bus, do so because they don’t have friends to share a taxi cost with, and don’t spend the majority of their nites earning baht under farangs (not that there’s anything wrong with that). BGs that never ride buses have no clue how to.

Getting an HIV test in Sukhumvit

A Hillary service girl told me every female LD and dek-serve at the Hillary bars (and I presume Morning Night also) have the cost of monthly blood tests deducted from their pay, even the dek-serves who claim they don’t go with customers.

She told me over 1,000 baht, and they don’t have any say in what they are tested for, and receive no feedback unless there is a positive result. Said dek-serve said she had never heard of anyone getting a positive result.

This link discusses free HIV testing available in Bangkok. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Free-Std-Tests-Bangkok-t156468.html

Would the Red Cross notify blood donors if their donated blood tested HIV positive?

About a year ago, a BG pointed out to me the small STD clinic on Sukhumvit near Soi 22 that she said many bars send their ladies to. They get the result stamped in a small book that bar managers can review to ensure compliance and good health. Har Har

The pre-weekly – lightning round!

SSB – Never intended to imply the Nana Hotel could save NEP; only that they and some other hotels (Dynasty, Grand President, Majestic Suites, etc) would see many of their regular customers look for lodging closer to Soi Cowboy, or just bypass Bkk and to to Pattaya.

I’m not current on Nana Hotel occupancy rates ss I now rarely recommend them to friends coming to visit, but, as recent as a year ago, they were frequently fully booked, even in the slow season.

Agree with PE that NEP is geared for tourists.
Comment posted by DJ at 31.08.2008

“Also local hotel owners are now calling for the end of nana because they think it is an eyesore.”

So how would the Nana Hotel maintain a high occupancy rate if NEP closed? Maybe through the ever-increasing number of middle eastern visitors?

I would have no regrets with NEP closing as long as the Pattaya bar scene survives.

YP “One thing I have noticed still only being early 20s, is that the girls dont seem to smile nearly near as much as when I used to come here on holiday. I havent aged that much, got fatter or balder.”

I agree nearly all BGs prefer the less knowledgable tourist coming here on holiday. We can speculate on the several reasons why this is so, and how quickly they can differentiate newbie tourists from expats and frequent visitors.

The sois off of Srinakharin Road seem to have Thai names (Soi Muu Baaan Suan Nakharin seems to be the closest) rather than the normal numbering system. Easiest to get to if you take the BTS to Phrakanong Station, and then catch a taxi going east on Sukhumvit. Tell the driver Seri Center (which is just past Seacon Square), then you’ll see the V Club and Mem Hip signs directly across the street. The 2 clubs are adjacent to each other.

Found a gogo bar in the middle of the city. Large, dark and cavernous. The girl that sat beside me only knew 4 English words: “1,000 short, 2,000 sleep”

Re: the FL whose mother turned ill. What pisses me off with these subterfuges are that the lady assumes you just got off the tourist boat, despite having your own apartment and speaking Thai. She’s more deserving of bus fare than taxi fare. The only satisfaction is that she realizes she lost 500-1000 baht, plus some time away from her Thai Gik, in using this ploy.

PMMP: Your minefield analogy perfectly describes why I still plough the FL spots, gogos, and beer bars for that next ‘discovery’. Reasonably priced soapys are a much better value than gogos for those only wanting to wet their pickle. There are times when I like taking the girl out for drinks and chatting, and letting the anticipation build prior to the conclusion. For ladies I already know, it’s nice when they phone and say they want to come over for a visit.

They are everywhere…

There are lots of soapy and ‘special’ Thai massage places all around Bkk. They pale in number to the small karaoke spots strung out along every large soi, and usually staffed by cuties in nice dresses. These are the local Thai ‘working man’s’ alternative to more expensive member clubs and upscale massage boom joints.

Posting from Phnom Penh. Caught an early flight from BKK to PNH after doing an all-nighter Christmas night at the Spice Club with some Charming Bar minks (we finished a bottle of JW in about 2 hours before I had to leave about 4:30 am to pack a suitcase before going to the airport).

This was supposed to be a non-mongering trip, but it’s too easy to slip into old habits, and the $10-20 USD ST rates make it too tempting to pass up.

I’m busy here in PNH during Daytime hours, and still trying to catch up on my sleep before returning to Bangkok for New Years Eve.

Many of the PB Hotel ST rooms at the car park level have the ob-gyn chairs, in addition to mirrors on the ceiling and walls. The PB overnight rates are low enough that I have occasionally just paid the attendant the additional 350-400 baht to keep the room all night, if desiring a kip afterwards.

However, the PB bathrooms are a disaster.

Back to the Grind part 1 by Phoenix

Prolly could do a separate blog on Thai P4P prices. Girls requesting over the top fees are really telling us “I don’t want to go with you, but if you give me enough money I will”. Usually results in lackadaisical service.

What each punter wants to pay, and each lady wants to accept, is up to them. Guys who are more into physical appearance than performance/personality will often happily pay high fees for their fantasy lady. BGs often go ST once or more out of their bars, then finish off the night at an after-hours place with the highly-desirable ‘young boy’.

Prices paid in other countries are irrelevant to what rates are reasonable here. The employment alternatives for most BGs are hard work at 6000 – 8000 baht a month for 10 hours of boring work, 6 days a week. Knowing this, I personally have no qualms paying 1000 ST / 1500 LT, and let the girls know additional tips are available for exceptional service. Starfish get 500 baht and out the door.

If a girl quotes me a high opening price, I don’t immediately answer, but start wandering my looks toward other girls. If she doesn’t quickly give me a reason to continue talking with her, I then move off and start chatting with another girl.

Soi Polo but it’s not on Polo fried chicken

TS- NEP certainly seems to have fewer customers and less energy than I remember from a couple of years ago. No specific criteria or data for me to judge this on, just a gut observance.

Certainly single male tourists visiting Bkk have increased sharply in the past few years, and the Nana Hotel still seems to keep a high occupancy rate, based on a couple of friends I have who live there.

Perhaps internet exposure that attracts higher numbers of single males to Thailand to enjoy the nightlife is also bringing other nightlife alternatives to travelers’ attentions.

Has anyone noticed how busy the Soi 7 Beergarden has been lately? Used to be the BG started emptying out around 9 pm; now it’s still standing room only well after 11 pm, and very busy from mid-afternoon hours. Thermae also has a resurgance in both the number of customers and quality of ladies.

Smitty: Was it about 1 year ago when Hollywood 3rd floor remodeled their bar with the bright white interior and coyote dancing theme? Looks as though it backfired, though perhaps the slowdown in the NEP 3rd floor bars might be largely due to fewer NEP customers, and that many can’t be arsed to climb to the upper level with the escalator out. Who wants to crawl through the piss-ladened walkway to get to their decrepit elevators.

The Thermae ladies I went with last night (the one I picked invited her roomie) both worked at the Carnival Bar until about 2 months ago, and left due to a big drop in customers and accelerated salary-cutting efforts by management. Even though high season has returned, both ladies said they much prefer the freelance work now to working in the ‘system’.

5 Rainbow 2
4 Hollywood Rocks

S. Botan – Cheapolay throws us a bone…

Smitty – Some blog readers might recognize the celestial Mr. Wu from the HBO series Deadwood.

CP3 is in Thonburi further up river from the Thonburi Plaza. Taxi rides from the Sukhumvit area anywhere into Thonburi are brutal. Looking at my online Bkk map and tapping my 4 year old memory, I recall taking the river taxi from Saphan Taksin to the Pin Klao Pier. Exiting the river taxi at the pier, it’s a short taxi ride to the CP3 soapy.

If you like walking, it’s about a 20 minute stroll from the pier. Stay to the right as you exit the pier, and walk up Pin Klao Road past the university on the right. As you bear right on Arun Amarin Road, you’ll see the Valentine and Snow White soapies on the opposite side of Arun Amarin. CP3 is just a little farther down Arun Amarin Road.

When I visited about 4 years ago, I was looking for something out of the farang area, and I spoke no Thai. The CP3 mamasan spoke excellent English, and came right over to me as I entered. (Unlike gogo mamasans, soapy mamasans seem to provide viable services).

Noting I was the only non-Asian client in the lobby, I asked mamasan to recommend ladies comfortable with farangs. She pointed out 3 or 4, and I selected one. Most ladies were of the tall, light-skin variety. I left satisfied for 1400 baht plus 200 tip to the lady(prices are probably higher now).

Good place to visit if you are comfortable speaking Thai. As a side note, the lady I was with spoke just enough English to tell me she was married with one child, and that her Thai husband didn’t like her occupation, but they needed the money. It’s a rare BG who owns up to supporting a husband.

City of Angels, Asian Style by DJ

ON: Might be a toss-up on which country’s security strategy provides better security.

Thailand, where the security guards are almost always unarmed and asleep, despite the recent widely-publisized case of mental security guard bashing and killing other guards he found asleep; or

Philippines, where most businesses are guarded by fully alert, under-trained thugs with wicked-looking weapons.

Some nice hotels in the Perimeter Area, Hana Hotel is nice and reasonably priced. The Perimeter bars, such as Niftys and Rios, offer aggressive service and fun on-site.

Air Asia announced a Bkk-Clark direct flight a couple of years ago, but Philippines Airline blocked govt. approval, and no further progress has been made. I agree this should be a popular route.

James: Voodoo and the mega gogo Dollhouse are 2 bars currently open 24 hours. Nice to have the option of barfining again at 10 am.

I agree Thai culture is much more interesting. However, the Philippines does have a long and interesting history, many unique festivals based on their Catholic heritage (Easter and All-Saints Day, to name a couple.

MP: Agree beggars are very aggressive, and many security guards carry inimidating short-stock shotguns. I’m not robbing that place! However, violence directed toward foreigners in AC is almost unheard of, and nowhere near the number of deaths and serious injuries suffered by farangs in Pattaya (not counting the ‘jumpers’). As in any location, one should walk around with an air of confidence, and stay out of dark, isolated areas. Would you walk around the Klong Toei slums alone late at night?

As stated in my article, little to do outside of P4P. There are nice golf courses, and day tours available to local volcanos. Not aware of any reclining buddhas though. Like Pattaya, no compelling reason to go there if they did not have the bars and ladies.

Poskat mentioned a couple of informative websites, as well as http://www.jimmyregina.com/frontpage.php and others.

Paying in advance of services would seem to risk little incentive for the girl to perform. However, vitually all the ladies I have BF’d in AC have performed superbly; starfishes are very rare compared to their Thai BG counterparts. I think this is because AC bar owners hold their staff responsible for keeping the customer happy, as opposed to most Thai barowners who could care less what happens after they collect the BFs.

Most AC bars will refund or offer replacement BFs if the customer has a valid reason (converting LT to ST, staying on the phone, etc.) for being unhappy with the girl. Try that with a Thai bar owner/manager!

Agree GFE is more prevalent in AC than Pattaya; the downside of this is that the AC girls are more aggressive in pursuing LT relationships and financial support than their Thai sisters. (Did I really say that?)

As you stated, forgoing condom use requires 2 consenting parties. It’s been known to happen in Pattaya and even in Bangkok. As in Thailand, I challenge anyone to find a working girl who will refuse sex without one. However, plenty of customers do refuse though.

It’s good to keep in mind that many Filipina and Thai BGs have local boyfriends / Giks, who never cover up and probably carry all sorts of maladies. If you want to bareback here or there, keep in mind you might also be sharing fluids with the local maengda boys.

Soi Sex by On Nutter

Another literary classic! Reminds me of the writing style of a long-term Thai expat (http://philipwilliams.freeservers.com/).

I’ll nominate the following for the blog segment best describing why Pattaya is far surpassing Bkk in the P4P game:

“My new friend was such an enthusiastic performer that I rewarded her with a lady-drink after the event. This struck me as a better deal than my usual Bangkok routine of buying lady-drinks and not getting laid.”

Phnom Penh – Day 1

MSB and MM: As a foreigner living in or visiting SE Asia countries, anyone under 18 is too young. Age of consent laws are applied differently to foreigners than for local citizens.

Shanghai has lots of cute and personable ladies, but they are paid very well for Cambodian standards ($50 USD monthly plus $1 for each LD, and have little incentive to go ST/LT with customers unless they really like the customer or he compensates well over local standards. One Shanghai girl used to work the Soi 7 BG / Gulliver’s / Nana Disco circuit in Bangkok.

The Khmer girls in Street 104 bars (and all venues) generally seem more business-oriented and serious than their Vietnamese counterparts.

Surprised Sharkys and Martinis had ladies on the younger side, as the many of the ones I saw on my last couple of visitss have been around there for several years, and are well into their 20s. No IDs in Cambodia, so ages are hard to verify, and often the lady will quote you an age based on what she thinks the customer likes.

I stayed at the Billabong when they first opened several years ago. Nice room, swimming pool, and poolside restaurant. However, popular for NGO types, who may frown on guys parading dates up to their rooms. Coincidentally, I believe the same guy owns both the Billabong Hotel and Walkabout.

My go-go guru by On Nutter

I too am afflicted by the assault of the unattractive vultures, and often quickly excuse myself to the toilet to discourage them. I found that most BGs do respect a customer who protects his baht and time, and does not fall for the bull$hit tactics designed for naïve newbies.

Psi – “Another strategy is to buy the mamasans drinks”. When I was a newbie tourist, I fell for the ‘experts’ advice that buying mamasans drinks would increase the face of the girl you were sitting with, make her think you are ‘jaidee’, and thus be rewarded with intense sex. I quickly learned falling for these BG101 tactics only increases their contempt for you, and encourages them to look for new ways to scam you. Other than their ability to recruit new staff (which can present its own worries), I believe bars would operate fine without the mamas.

PMMP – “I’ve seen working girls lose face and get mighty joe pissed off but never over not being bought a drink. Most if not all of the time it’s when they’ve gone with a Punter already and then that Punter takes a different girl from the same bar later on.”

My personal experience from butterflying in the same bar is not necessarily loss of face, but that the 1st one you barfined ‘claims’ you as her property, and her and her mates promptly inform the new cutie you are eyeing that you are already assigned and therefore unavailable. “Sorry, I not know you have girlfriend already” .

“she hit me in front of everyone so now I have to kill her”. This exact quote personally related to me (and no doubt others) on the BigMango’s last nite. I trust the offender is still alive, and the aggrieved is not in the Monkeyhouse.

TS – “the dance of the seven towels” Thought I had experienced all the scams, but this one has escaped me. Please enlighten me on this ploy.

Also, I agree that letting the girl know her compensation is partially dependent on performance is often effective. I find that monetary demands and performance levels are often inversely proportional.

10 things I hate about Bangkok – Part 5 by On Nutter

ON: Another superb piece! No one can match Brits when it comes to dry humor, either at writing or at movies (Aussies come close).

I try not to let BGs see my very ordinary mobile. They look at it with pity the same way they might look at a 2 inch pecker.

For me, the Sizzler salad bar is a quality feed and good value. Eating at empty Thai restaurants can make you feel as though you are feeding on carrion with a flock of vultures circling overhead.

I’m impressed at how the crawling beggar can move seamlessly from Silom to Sukhumvit to the On Nut BTS stop, and how he always finds puddles to crawl through, even during the dry season. The locals drop decent dosh for him at On Nut.

Don’t you love the BGs who announce ‘I go dance now’ just as they return with the drink you just bought for them? Then, after you promptly pay the bin and are walking out, they lean over and ask you for a 100 baht tip for the 30 seconds they sat with you.

Other than meeting friends for drinks, I’m slowly weaning myself off Bkk gogos.

Win Motorcy by Werewolf

WW: I think you captured very well the transition many expats experience from their intitial, eye-opening plunge into the nightlife scene as a newby tourist, to the jaded views that develop after years of over-exposure to the hard-core business aspects of the scene.

Now, when I want to recapture the ‘fun and innocence’ of my intitial tourist visits, I’ll travel to Pattaya, the Philippines, or Cambodia with some friends, or just check into the Nana Hotel for a couple of nights. Often, the working girls seem to react with a more sanuk manner to a perceived tourist than the expat.

BTW, some friends and I talked about buying and wearing some mototaxi vests last Halloween. One of our group, who had lived in Thailand several decades, reminded us that many mototaxi drivers have to borrow thousands of baht to purchase a vest giving them a spot on busy sois, and would resent any ‘unsanctioned’ person wearing a vest, or might consider it an insult on their profession. Sounded extreme, but gave us enough thought to pass.

10 things I hate about Bangkok – Part 4 by On Nutter

ON: Another great list! Enjoyable reading.

My friends and I have voiced the same opinion about the Kingtex ‘pecker chokers’. What a misnomer!

The only smaller brands I have come across have been the ‘Number One’ brand popular in Cambodia (I believe the brand name refers to the number of inches the product will stretch to), and those god-awful, tube-shaped things they’ll sell you at the PB Hotel if you happen to get caught out without your own stock.

A girl I was recently with had a laugh trying to work one over her toe. It broke!

Room service in Phnom Penh by On Nutter

On Nutter: Nice opening paragraph about Phnom Penh. The 1st time visitor to the Walkabout (or Skankabout as some call it) might be sometimes scared off by the rough looking ladies lounging around, but occasionally 1 or 2 gems will pop in, and then are quickly snapped up.

I was surprised as to how many ATM machines dispensing US dollars have sprung up just this year. There is actually one in the lobby of the Flamingo hotel, just across the street from the Walkabout.

Phnom Penh is not as fun now as it was when I first visited in 2001. The US $5 ST and $10 LT prices, and all-night pajama parties with 3 or 4 Viet cuties (yes, they would bring their silk and flannel jammies) were the highlight of my earlier mongering visits to Asia.

Now, there are much fewer Viet ladies working the bars, and the Khmer ladies, though many are very lovely, do not have the same fun attitude that the Vietnamese ‘taxi girls’ had.

Currently, farangs living in PNH generally pay $10 ST and $20 LT, whereas the working ladies expect $20 and $30 from tourists. With these fees, a LT with drinks and a barfine might run about $40-$50 USD, as compared to over $100 USD in Bkk.

There still is good fun and value to be had, once you learn how to weed out the ladies in the hostess bars who tease you into thinking they will accompany you back to your hotel, but are really out just for a night of dancing and drinking, before returning back to their local boyfriends / husbands for the night.

Beware the moto taxi drivers offering you illegal activities. It’s been widely reported that NGOs offer rewards for setting up naïve and/or stupid male tourists. Ignore these leeches.

Many guys are intimidated by the aggressive customer service in Sophies. Personally, I didn’t object too strenuously to having my shorts unzipped as I sat down at the bar, and promptly being serviced by at least 3 different mouths as I drank and chatted with my friend, followed by selecting the one with the cutest mouth, and taking her into one of the sleazy ST rooms for additional perversions.

BBB: Agree the Thai embassy in PHN is to be avoided for any visa purposes. Horrible service and attitudes, according to some friends.

10 things I hate about Bangkok by On Nutter

OnNutter and BBK continue to provide both enlightening and entertaining articles, making this forum one of the best sources of Bkk nightlife info.

I’ll add:

FLOWER MAFIA: The childrens’ aggressiveness and rudeness are an annoyance, but the real concern is their vulnerability in being tossed into a seedy lifestyle at all hours of the night. There are few civilized countries on this planet where society would permit the predatory adults and corrupt cops to profit off these children in full sight of the public.

RE: Muslims in the soi 3 and 3/1 area:
My friends who come for holidays in Thailand and have not been exposed to Muslim culture, are usually intimitated by the loud and confrontational manner that middle-easterners normally conduct their business and personal affairs.

The only area I consider scary and intimidating is the small dead-end soi off of Sukjumvit Soi 3 between Nana Square and the small Y Not beer bar complex. Primaril populated by West Africans and purportedly a center for drug transactions. If you walk down that small soi at night, you will get hard stares from the occupants. The is a small beer bar down that alley that won’t be getting my business again.

A good girl shakes the farang money tree by On Nutter

PB has it right as you cannot generalize about BGs and (alleged) non-P4P ladies. Both can be absolutely mercenary, but sometimes sweet and fun company. I would rather stick with the P4P ladies as they are generally more upfront with what they do.

Despite the risks of having a relationship, with sex as the main objective, with a non P4P lady, I have some friends seeking just that as they are tiring of the increasing predatory behavior of the bargirls. I think they are just heading for more disappointment.

One aspect that might explain Ms. Ayutthaya’s actions is that Thai ladies frequently relate love with the boyfriend’s willingness to buy them whatever they want; whereas western males equate love with the lady providing sex without any financial considerations. I just talked with a BG who recently broke up with her (former) live-in farang BF over this misconception.

The economics of Taxi Hell

Phoenix – Agree getting a taxi to a big event at Muang Thong Thani can be expensive, because there is always a traffic nightmare for the drivers (and their passengers during weekend events. Trying to catch a taxi after the event ends with the thousands of others can be worse. Might be cheaper to rent a car for 24 hours and drive yourself, or catch a bus or minivan from Victory Monument.

Smitty – Great insight on the Thai taxi business practices. Manila taxi drivers are uniformly bad (at least IME), they never use the meter when carrying foreigners and always try to pressure the foreigners into higher fares and ‘tours’. At least you can often get honest taxi drivers in Thailand, except in the tourist and nightlife areas.

The young lady I BF’d the other night reamed out the taxi driver for trying to charge us 100 baht to go to Soi 4 from Cowboy. When we arrived at Soi4, she insisted on paying the driver herself with exact change for the metered fare (37 baht), no tip.
