Sukhumvit Spotlight Issue 3: All-you-can-eat Buffets for every day of the week by Spotlight Guy

Posted by Spotlight Guy | Blog, Newbies, Reader Submissions | Posted on September 27th, 2010

If you’re the kind of guy who likes to clean his plate and go back for more, and then do it again, and maybe again, then you’ll certainly be interested in knowing about the all-you-can-eat options around Bangkok.  Just to make sure that you can fill your tummy every day, I’ve prepared a list of buffets that will  allow you to sample a little of everything, then sample it again, each and every day of the week.

Friday
Baccara
One of the most popular go go bars on Soi Cowboy also serves up one of the most popular all-you-can-eat dinners in Bangkok every Friday night.  The price varies at times, but the last time I was there it was 100  baht per person, and the buffet was served from 9 pm until about 11 pm.  They spend the afternoon barbequing a pig, then cut it up and serve it with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, potato salad, gravy, and sometimes a tossed salad.  There is also Thai food; usually 4 to 6 dishes each Friday, though the selection varies.  Sit on the open-air veranda in front of the go go and stuff yourself, but be aware that the service staff will expect you to order at least one drink.  I’ve heard it rumored that the owner of Baccara runs this buffet every week as an excuse to barbeque the pig and irritate “the Arab” who owns several bars on the Soi, but I have no idea whether that’s true or not.   This is probably not the place to bring your wife or girlfriend, though it’s a great place to chow down with a bunch of good mates.

Saturday
The Wine Pub – Ratchatewi
The Wine Pub may not be known to people who spend most of their time in Sukhumvit and Silom.  It’s on the second floor of the Pullman Hotel.  The full address is:

2nd floor at Pullman Bangkok Hotel
King Power, 8/2 Rangnam Road, Thanon-Phayathai,
Ratchathewi, Bangkok

Every Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. the Wine Pub offers an all-you-can-eat tapas meal priced at 900 baht per person.  The meal includes a bottle of wine, and if you don’t finish the bottle you can take it home.  The décor is upscale and trendy, and the service is very good.  This is a great place for a first date or a dinner with business colleagues.

Sunday
The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit – Sukhumvit Road
This is an elegant Sunday meal.  The price is 2,000 baht per person for one of the best Sunday brunches around, which is served from 11:30 a.m. until 3:00p.m. Enjoy a buffet that is heavy on seafood while a live jazz trio plays gently in the background. Drinks are included in this buffet that is all about quality, but be ready to add a 10% service charge and 7% VAT to the bill, bringing the total price to 2,340 baht per person.  It’s a wonderful buffet in a great atmosphere and worth every satang!

Monday
Coyote Mexican Restaurant on Sukhumvit Road near Soi 33
We featured Coyote in the very first Spotlight, but that’s no reason to ignore the great Monday night buffet that they offer, so here we go again. The price is 249 baht and the hours are from 6:30 to 9:30. Good quality Mexican food is available along with happy hour pricing until 6:30. Nice atmosphere, good service and a manager who has a good eye for picking pretty girls to work in the place. Your wife or girlfriend will feel right at home here, and it’s also suitable for a business dinner or a night out with a group of friends.

Tuesday
Narai Pizza – locations throughout Bangkok
The price is 179 baht and the buffet runs all day, from 10:00 am to 9:30 pm. I like the pizza here, though some people say it’s crap. They offer some spicy noodles on the buffet as well but I wouldn’t recommend them. One nice thing about this buffet is that it includes soft drinks. They offer Pepsi and 7up, but I usually get the lemon iced tea. This is a chain restaurant aimed at families, university students and the like. They have several locations, but I usually go to Century Mall near Victory Monument BTS or Fortune Center near Rama 9 MRT station.

Wednesday
The Great American Rib Company on Sukhumvit Soi 36
The price is 450 baht but not 100% sure about the hours.  You can sit outside on the open air deck at large picnic tables with wooden benches and enjoy American style barbeque in a very casual atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxed dinner with your girlfriend or a long night of drinking and eating with several of you best pals. Beef, pork and chicken are featured, and a specialty of the house is jalapeno corn bread, which I really love.  You’ll pay for your drinks here.  I’d suggest plenty of cold beer to wash down the food, and then a taxi to take you back to your room for a long night’s sleep.

Thursday
Yuan Chinese Restaurant – Millennium Hilton Hotel
Okay, I’m cheating a little bit on this one because the buffet is available every day, but the price is 650 baht per person for an all-you-can-eat dim sum lunch that is available from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  I’ve actually never eaten in this restaurant, though I’ve had some lovely evenings on the riverside veranda.  This is one of Bangkok’s best quality hotels, so I’m prepared to recommend the restaurant on the strength of the Hilton reputation.

The Tuesday night “Mexican” buffet for about 300 Baht at Bourbon Street in Washington Square near the Dubliner kicks Coyote’s butt and for that matter the highly touted (in some circles like Stickman) Sunrise taco franchises. If you are into really tasty food, and Mexcian that inclues some fish dishes try it. Coyote is really lame in comparison at about the same price.

Good review. Theres a Narai Pizza in Union Mall (Pahon Yothin) but I was always put off, as the place looked a bit skanky inside.

The Coyotes buffet is nice, in the way a ham sandwich is nice. Kind of forgettable, but the chilli is really good. The Pig and potato @ Baccara is hard to beat, especially for a poultry 100bones

Pretty good. The Tapas is really good and it just keeps coming and coming. They’ve got this olive puree thing, delicious. Service is hectic, but not bad. Always a good time, and definitely worth the price.

You forgot the 100 Baht moo katah joints!

Also, for a fun night out the Shabu-Shabu at the Robot Restaurant – Hajime. Two all you can eat options depending on what type of meat you want access to – higher end is B650. Better food (but pricier) than the Oishi Shabu-Shabu all you can eats places, but served by robots! http://www.djmick.co.uk/travel/hajime-japanese-robot-restaurant-bangkok-pictures-and-video/

I’m still after the opposite – somewhere that does good farang food in small portions for the smaller price. Plenty of farang places I can drop B250 and be absolutely stuffed with a great freshly cooked mean and I often don’t want to be absolutely stuffed :)

Can someone do a report on the days of the week when all the bar girls go to get their ‘regular’ check-ups?

To start us off I believe the ladies of the Star of Light get themselves sheep-dipped on a Tuesday, or thats what the sign on the wall of the bathroom says anyway!

The Mexican Buffet at Bourbon street sounds great, Coyotes has been a let down in the past, however I won’t have a bad word said about Sunrise Taco’s, espicially now they deliver to my door!

You can beat the pig roast down at Baccara on a Friday, however I don’t remember paying for it in the past. I just picked up a plate and loaded it with the dish of the day!

I hope he does do it to piss ‘the Arab’ off!

  9. Spotlight Guy says:

@johno: not sure which ones you think are too good to be true, but they all are (true, that is)

@vpi78: Good tip on the Bourbon Street buffet, which I wasn’t aware of. Bourbon Street regularly puts up some of the best food in town. I was trying to put in a variety of different types of food at a range of prices, so Tuesday was always gonna be the 179 baht Narai Pizza deal, but that’s what the comments section is for. I’ll be trying out the Bourbon Street deal as soon as I have the chance.

@penfold: are you paying with chicken bones? Or did you mean “paltry”?

    @WFTM: what pmmp said.

Cabby: The Moo Katah joints were covered in Spotlight #2, and since they are all-you-can eat all the time, I figured I’d focus on other places in #3. Thanks for mentioning them, though. I’ve got to say that I’m not a huge fan of shabu shabu but I know that they are usually packed, so good tips there as well. Check the Dubliner entry in Spotlight #2 for a smaller meat portion at a smaller price. I listed the Dubliner ribs at 195 baht, but I noticed that a commenter corrected that error; they’re only 150 baht.

While I’m talking about typos, I can note that the Coyote happy hour listed in this post says happy hour pricing “until 6:30″ but it should say “until 7 pm”

@Simon Templar: the pricing policy at the Friday buffet seems to change from week to week. I have had free food there many times, but on my last dinner there they had a sign posted saying that the cost was 100 baht, and I got charged that amount. It may have changed again since my last visit.

Personally, I think Sunrise Tacos has mediocre food that is very bland. I’ve only ever eaten there about three times. The first time I ate there I asked them for the hottest fiery hot sauce they had to put on my tacos, then asked them if they’d made a mistake when I got a mild salsa. They insisted that was the volcano-hot sauce they advertised. Very disappointing. I hadn’t eaten there in about a year, but a friend dragged me there last Wednesday night. The quesadillas were the same bland fare I’ve had before, but I was really happy with the small slice of tasty pumpkin pie I had for dessert.

@vpi78: The Bourbon St. “Mexican” buffet kicks Sunrise Taco’s butt? Are you SERIOUS? To each his own, but man, to these Mexican-food-eating tastebuds (5 years living in Chicago, working and eating with Mexicans, 2 in California), Bourbon St. is “Taco Bell level”, at BEST…yeah, the buffet’s a pretty good deal if you wanna stuff yourself for $12 or so, but there’s no contest IMO compared to Sunrise if we’re talking quality/authenticity…

  14. vpi78 says:

@ratchada you’ve got to be joking if you think Bourbon Street is Taco Bell quality. But as you say to each his own. Mexican food is great now in Bangkok compared to just 5 years ago. Sunrise is good particularly since they are open 24 hours at some locations and as you say you can get it delivered but really now it is more like Taco Bell than Bourbon.

Another buffet tip for the experience is to try the Nana Hotel buffet at Noon from Monday-Fridays. The entertainment of guys rolling in with Mia Noi du jour is worth the trip.

  15. Retired Guy At Large says:

The Londoner Pub on Sukhumvit Rd. at Soi 33 has an excellent Sunday buffet from 12-3 and again from 6-9 in the evening. Four carved meats: roast beef, lamb, pork, and chicken, roast and mashed potatoes, yorkshire pudding, veggies, many salads, including a waldorf salad, Thai dishes which your girlfriend will pronounce too bland, and a complete dessert spread with pie, cakes, fruit, cheese, and ice cream on request. All for a paltry 470bht. The roast beef is invariably quite rare, the way God meant roast beef to be, and is one of the tastier beefs I’ve had in this town.

@cabby Recently I’ve discovered Santa Fe, they have some really good deals and the portions aren’t silly and the standard of food IMO is pretty good. Obviously you can always try Took La Dee, its exactly what it says it is.

For Sunday brunch the SHangri-La is awesome and if you got kids its even better.
Or the JW Marriott is definitely one of the best buffets in town anytime or any day of the week.

  17. On Nutter says:

The Majestic Grande on Sukhumvit Soi 2 does a fantastic lunch buffet every day for only 300 baht at its Dine@7 restaurant on the seventh floor.

The Chinese restaurant on the 10th floor of The Landmark has an excellent dim sum buffet at lunchtime, but I think that is only weekdays. Not too expensive … about 350 baht as I recall.

The Grand President on Sukhumvit Soi 11 has a decent selection, including Indian dishes, at its lunch buffet on weekdays for about 230 baht, but cheap Charlies should head to the Ibis on Sukhumvit Soi 4 for its 149 baht lunch buffet on weekdays.

Trojan – Where is Sante Fe?

I saw an advert in the Bangkok Post Classifieds that advertised Tenderloins (gay name for a steakhouse if you ask me) on Sukhumvit 33, does all you can eat Sunday BBQ brunch for 500baht and does a 1000baht all you can eat and drink option aswell. Their day to day snap is really good, so a purple note seems like a steal

I just checked their website, but it doesnt give set times. Even if it was just a 3 hour window, you could do some real damage with 1000b i you were a greedy fuck

Also, Sunrise is toilet. Their delivery service is on the shit side of awful, and the grub is bland. The only time I hit Sunrise is when Ive shoveled a bunch of alcohol down my neck, and need to feed my urge for Mexican food at an unsavory hour

Oh, yeah, whats that hotel just on the other side of the Raja Car Park. Buffet in there on a Sunday, cheap as chips and tastey as hell to boot. Big mix of food and good on beverages too.

Sukhumvit Grand thingy…… or whatever. 7th floor, give it a whirl…. tell ‘em I sent ya!

@ Spotlight Guy: Loving the Sunrise vs Bourbon street battle of the Taco. I propose a blind taste-off challenge! Neutral Ground, no weapons!

YP: Not only is Sunrise a toilet but the last 2 times I have eaten that swill, the toilet was the first place I ended up after eating there. I hope Taco Bell comes back to Thailand as while not the best Mexican food it is definitely the best Mexican fast food.

  24. Cabby says:

    Ohh… almost forgot.

Tsubaki on Suk 33/1 (opposite Fuji) has an all you can eat Sushi train for lunch on the weekends for <B300. You want to get there no later than 12:30 on Sat/Sun though – its best when full of customers so there is plenty of variety going past. I think they have an all you can eat Sushi + Shabu dinner.

  25. Trojan says:

YP, Santa Fe is at Central Bangna and Seacon. Probably not on most of you guys radar but I just assumed they must be everywhere.
I used to food taste for a living and certain months had to cover buffets. Pretty much all the 5 star hotels are unbelievable but also quite pricey for those of us that earn a crust here. Although in saying that its a good deal if you’re out for a proper meal as everyone gets exactly what they wants and the cost is about the same as a decent restaurant would cost for a la carte.
The Holiday Inn’s Cafe G has a cheap weekday buffet dinner and lunch about 199 if I’m not mistaken. I haven’t tried it yet though so can’t vouch for the quality.
If you want something different to impress a lady then the Shangri-la’s buffet cruise is the best in terms of food, some of the others are more fun though if you’re into that kind of thing.

  26. BangkokMilkshakes says:

@YP…the Tenderloins Buffet on sunday is a killer. it starts at 11-30, and shuts at 4.30 ( I think) the food here come second to the drinks…all you can drink for 950…and thats any drink, wine, cocktails, shots, beer….for 5 hours. I have been twice and its taken me until tuesday to feel normal again…there is food, but it quickly becomes irrelevant.

on a similar tip…the bar in the landmark – not the Huntsman, the hotel bar on fllor 2, does all you can drink from 6-12pm on a friday evening for 750 baht, which is similarly insane. they also do a buffet in the restaurant there…at the moment its 50percent off on all food orders, so you can get all you can eat crab/lobster (and all the other buffet standards) for 750, with an all you can drink option on wines and cocktails for a further 650. All damn fine deals

    View all comments by BangkokMilkshakes

  27. Young Penfold says:

Milkshakes – I’ve eaten a few times during ‘normal’ hours at Tenderloins, and the snap is first rate, so I assume the buffet stuff would be on a par.

If Im thinking of the right bar in the Landmark, 750baht for 6 hours of unlimited booze tossing is sweeter than Lela Star’s snatch. I remember taking a floosey there once, and 2 beers and a cocktail (Singhas for her, Pina Coloda for me) weighed in something like 800baht, which puts it into perspective

Does anyone remember when Cathouse in Nana used to be all-you-can-drink for 5 hours at 300baht?

  32. Spotlight Guy says:

@Red Barron: Jeez! Two entries that focus on getting food in Bangkok and suddenly the blog is a restaurant guide!? Don’t be stupid. There’s 462 posts on the site… two of them talk about places to eat in Bangkok.

My contribution to the tapestry of this blog isn’t (and, I think, never will be) to write about good girls, uni girls and threesomes, but I’d hope that there is room for a bit of discussion about the other things on offer in Bangkok. And don’t worry, there are plenty of boring topics to choose from so I don’t plan to always write about restaurants.

And I’m confident that the blog administrators will still be willing to print as many stories of your sexual conquests along Soi 4 as you care to write about.

By the way, I went to the list of reader submissions to read your previous contributions and learn what your interests are, but didn’t find anything listed.

I did find some interesting comments that you’ve posted in the past:

It might have been a Friday YP but my recollection is it didn’t really make much difference at Cathouse.

The guy didn’t miss a beat, got right up handed the Thai bird some cash and dashed into the loo at Big Dogs.

  43. Werewolf says:

On Sunday I met up with a friend and we decided to do a Soi 33 buffet, choosing between the Londoner and Tenderloins.

We chose the Londoner for no particular reason. It was a high quality carvery with plenty of additional food. My personal favorite was the cheese board that had a good blue cheese along with some decent cheddar, a nice brie or camembert and another creamy cheese. I loaded up on cholesterol and took three helpings of sliced ham. My pal and I sat in the place from noon till 4 pm, disposing of 4 pitchers of microbrewed beer while I filled my plate 5 times.

That would have been enough to put me in the gym for several hours doing penance, but I found myself with about two hours to kill at lunchtime today, so I went to Narai Pizza where I ate the equivalent of 4 full pizzas (24 slices). I almost couldn’t move afterward.

I’ll be doing a hundred hours on the rowing machine to make up for my sins of two days.

    But it was worth it.
