UFC 104 Preview by Young Penfold

Posted by Young Penfold | Big Mango Bar, Blog, Posts, Reader Submissions | Posted on October 23rd, 2009

UFC 104 is this Saturday from the Staples Centre in LA, 7:00pm - In the last 2 UFC events, I’ve gone 11-1 with my predictions, so am sticking my balls out of the bath, and laying down some predictions. Pmmp thinks Machida is gonna run through Shogun, and has promised to treat me to a soapie WHEN I prove him wrong, as a way of an apology for questioning me on such matters. A fool and their money are easily parted. This’ll be like taking candy from a baby. Or in my case, money from a ladyboy

So here we go……………………….

Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida vs Maurico ‘Shogun’ Rua (Light Heavyweight title)

I can see the bookies losing a bunch of cash on this. I’m picking Shogun here. Machida hasn’t lost a single round in his MMA career, and has looked devastating in his last 2 fights. He manraped a very tough Thiago Silva, putting him to sleep at 4:59 of the very first round, the he ‘beat the black’ out Rashad Evans to a stoppage in the 2nd round to capture the LHW crown at UFC 98, last May. Some MMA stat websites claim he only gets struck once every 2 and a half rounds.

Shogun, after smashing his way to the PRIDE 2005 Middleweight (205lb) Grand Prix, has looked a bit shit in the UFC it pains me to say. He looked terribly out of shape and sluggish in his UFC debut loss toForrest Griffin, and was doubly toss, in a TKO victory over the 184 year old Mark Coleman. Some speculated this was because back in PRIDE, there was no athletic commission who tested for substances, so everyone was pumping steroids in their arse. Most people have forgotten Shogun has come back from 2 major knee reconstructions which would/could/have ended other fighters careers, and taken fights at short notice, which would of hampered his fitness.

He came back and knocked Chuck Liddell out in the first round in his last fight, but looked like the Shogun of old, with quick sharp hands, and great footwork. This video of him kicking the snot out of former UFC LHW champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, is a personal fave of mine  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aXrKPyayhU

Shogun needs to play this one cool, and somehow try and get Machida in the clinch, and cut the Octagon off. Fuck knows how he will, but Im sticking with my boy on this one. If he doesn’t utilitse a sound gameplan, and gets wreckless, Rua will be getting knocked the fuck out, I just hope he doesn’t. I might cry as i do kind of have the hots for him. Don’t tell anyone I said that.

Shogun by TKO in the 4th

Young Penfold by Ground and Pound on the Nataree bath-whore Pmmp treats me to.

Cain Velasquez vs Ben Rothwell- Many pundits and fans are claiming Cain Valasquez as the next big thing in the UFC Heavyweight division. The Mexican fighter has a great amateur wrestling pedigree, and as proved he has bricks for hands, with 5 of his first 6 wins coming by TKO (only 1 of those went past the first round)

His last fight against Cheick Kongo, showed he has great takedowns and good ground n pound, but was unable to finish Kongo, who despite being a top UFC Heavyweight, is a total fucking retard on the ground. Cain got dropped with a few stiff jabs, but took Kongo down, and grounded out a decision

Rothwell is a grizzly veteran, with a stellar record of 30-6, with an impressive run in the now defunct IFL. Despite looking like a complete fucking IT dork, and the kid who would get his dick pinched and belly slapped raw in the changing rooms at school, hes a very game opponent with heavy hands and very good ground and pound

I just cant see Rothwells experience helping him against a far more aggressive, athletic and hungry fighter in Velasquez.

Rothwell should bring a pillow, because hes going to sleep. – Velasquez by KO in the 2nd round

Gleison Tibau Vs. Josh ‘The Dentist’ Neer - I have no interest in this fight whatsoever. Im sorry. Couldnt care less who wins, loses, lives or dies. I predict an absolute snoozer here

Neer is only 26, but already has accumulated an MMA record of 25-8-1. Neer likes to ‘stand and bang’ (but dont we all?) but is very competant on the ground. He does have some great previous wins over the likes of Din Thomas, Mac Danzig, Melvin Guillard, and he has also holds a unanimous decision win over Joe Stevenson.

Glesion is a huge Lightweight, who usually usually cuts from 180lbs to make the 155lb limit. This cat has thighs like fucking fire hydrants. I just dont like his style of fighting. His stand-up is sloppy, and I think he likes to lay n pray, and grind out decisions. I like Neer, but I just think Tibau is gonna smother him

The viewers should bring a pillow, because I think this fight will put you to sleep. Maybe you can borrow Ben Rothwells

Tibau by boring Neer to death. Or unanimous decision

Joe ‘Daddy’ Stevenson Vs. Spencer ‘The King’ Fisher -  I have no reasoning as to why, but I hate Joe Stevenson with a passion. I wouldn’t dare say it to his face, as he rightfully so, would kick me to pieces and I have ne reasoning to hate him, but I do. Hes a very game fighter, but is a real ‘gatekeeper’ as he always seems to struggle with ‘elite’ opponents.

SPencer Fisher always has exciting fights, and lets it all hang out. (insert cock joke) and has won 2 ‘fight of the night’ honours for his 2 wars against Sam Stout.

Stevenson will wanna take this to the ground. If it goes there, thats where the fight will stay, but if Fisher keeps this standing, I can see a long night for Stevenson, with him eating a lot of punches. He also has a tendancy to get cut quite easily, and bleeds more than the Pattaya hooker I sodomised last week.

Joe Stevenson by TKO in the 3rd

Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson Vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida- Anthony Johnson is one of my personal favourite fighters. Hes is a huge and athletic welterweight. Fuck knows what his parents feed him, but I want some. Small children perhaps? He has great wrestling and sick knockout power (See knockouts over Kevin Burns, Tommy Speer and Chad Reiner) and is a huge prospect. GSP is a country mile ahead of the rest of the welterweight pack, but I think Johnson could, with time to develop, be a legit challenger.

Yoshida is only really famous to the casual fan for getting his dick knocked sniff by Josh Koscheck at UFC: Fight for the Troops, and he got taken out on a stretcher in a neck brace. He did beat Brandon Wolff in his last fight, but my Grandad could of beaten him, and he died 3 years ago. I just dont see any way Yoshida can take this fight from Johnson.

Johnson is very comfortable on his feet, and I think Yoshida is going to wake up wondering what the fuck happened

Johnson by KO whener he feels like it

  7. And this is an “insider’s take on Thailand” how?

View all comments by Pattaya Ghost

  8. FUMF says:

Not too hard to get the connection to Thailand – all the best MMA guys have either done a stint training somewhere in Thailand, or have a Muay Thai teacher in their Gym. There is a Gym close by to me somewhere on Rachadapisek which has a website aimed primarily at getting guys out from the US for a few months of hard core training. Non AC rooms for about 3K baht per month (or something like that), and training 5 times per day. They promote some kind of package for US$1K or US$1.5 K per month – including meals, training & accommodation.

I should probably take a month off work and check in just so I can make a dent in my gut.

  9. DJ says:

Bob Arum, Boxing promoter on MMA:

“UFC are a bunch of skinhead white guys watching people in the ring who also look like skinhead white guys. . . . ”

“Ninety percent of the people in the audience wear tattoos . . .”

“It’s horrible. Guys rolling around like homosexuals on the ground . . .”

Sounds like he is describing PMMP’s head on YM’s body.

Boxing’s popularity has been decreasing for a long time due to corruption, cheating, and poor organization.

I don’t really follow MMA, but it seems their popularity is soaring.

I wonder how their total revenues (gate and broadcast) are now comparing to boxing, and do the MMA promoters ‘manage’ their sport better than the boxing promoters?

  11. pmmp says:

@DJ: That just wreaks of fear from Arum. My guess is he will soon take a “if you can’t beat them, join them” approach and get into UFC himself. How dare he make fun of my head.

Boxing is done! Impossible to watch after you’ve tasted UFC. UFC is great right now and the management is doing a great job. Every month there are major events, and in between there are minor events and The Ultimate Fighter reality series, which is amazing. It will be ruined eventually though when greedy promoters like Arum and King get involved. Keep em out Dana, Keep em out.

Here’s an interesting story…. I was heading down to Silom for a ‘half english’ when I took a wrong turn and ended up in the Star of Light. As I sipped my drink I got chatting to a fellow Brit who was gregarious without being boorish and it turned out he was a 15 year veteran. He talked about how there used to be curtains at the bar through which you poked your honourable member. I had heard this before but new to me was this: Above the till on a shelf there is a picture of a guy. His job was to pass up and down with a bucket of soapy water and wash your john thomas before the gals got down to business. So next time you’re passing, check out the photo and tip your hat to him.

Wrestling is an olympic sport. In fact 2, Freestlye and Greco Roman. In Greco Roman you can only attack above the waist.

MMA is mixed martial arts – what they do in the UFC.

MMA is made up predominantly (currently at least) of Muay Thai, Brazillian jiu jitsu, Boxing and Wrestling. Althought, you also regulary see influences from judo, taekwondo and karate.

However, techniques from any art are allowed as long as they are within the rules.

@Dancing Boy – Anyone coming in so overweight for a fight is pretty shit form. You can usually forgive a pound or 2 slippage, but 6 Lbs (just under half a stone) is wank

I think its a case of Johnson being such a young athletic guy, hes kind of ‘outgrown’ the WW division

Hes been fined 20% of his fight purse, although im not sure if this will also exclude him from any potential ‘fight/submission/knockout’ of the night bonuses

@UFC299: I only called the Lyoto win. Have to give props to Penfold though without a doubt. Scampering Jack put in a spoiler comment earlier but it was spot on. He said that Penfold pretty much nailed every fight, including the Lyoto fight. Lyoto was an easy pick. We can debate if Rua actually won, but no matter, it was amazing what he did against a fighter that never lost a round before, and Penfold calling it was pretty impressive. Lyoto still has the belt and Penfold is 0-1 against me, but still.

Im lost for word. An absolute cunt of a decision.

I dont know what those judges were sipping, but I dont want any of it. Shogun pressed the action, was more aggressive, had better octagon control, and kicked Machidas legs and ribs to shit. I had it 4-1 in terms of rounds, and 3-2 at a stretch

I thought the Bisping/Hamill decision was a shocker, but this one took the cake.

Cain looked impressive, and bullied Rothwell, but it was an early/bad call. Cain also proved, despite having fast and heavy hands, that he doesnt have that one-punch knockout power

Didn’t mean to leave a spoiler. Just saw the fights in real time and wanted to shout out Penfold.

At the shady joint I went to see the fights there was a good old ghetto local vs. suburban brawl. Tables turned over and such like. Cops showed up and wanted to arrest everyone. I was rooting for the locals, of course, but that’s my style.

Nice warm up to the ‘official’ fights.

Rothwell looked like a monster. Took a huge beating and still wanted more. What’s up with that?

  52. Scampering Jack Wilshere says:

Oh no. Machida won the decision? I left right at the end of the fight assuming Shogun won, which he did. I wanted to get away from the ghetto v. suburbs fights, but you tell me, would you rather fight Shogun or Machida after they finished? Machida could barely walk so I’d rather deal with him.

    Horrific decision. Really, I’m shocked.

Penfold, you were done wrong. Sorry. At least Liverpool won today.

View all comments by Scampering Jack Wilshere

  53. pmmp says:

No worries SJW on the spoiler. As for the decision, if Lyoto was hurt so bad and could barely walk, why didn’t Shogun finish him in the 5th? Never leave it in the judges hands, especially when fighting the champion. Go out guns a blazing in the 5th and take his belt. Shogun didn’t.

    View all comments by pmmp

  54. Young Penfold says:

Go in ‘guns blazing’ against Machida, and you get fucked up. Im sure Rua thought by round 5 it was in the bag, and to rest charging in and making a mistake, he’d continue to kick Machida some more

Just because you dont ‘knockout or submit’ the champ, doesnt mean you didn’t beat him. Even the biggest Machida ball-lickers cant deny the fact their boy got beaten

SJW – Your right about Rothwell. Although he wasn’t gonna win and was getting bullied, he still wanted more. Cain has pillows for hands though. Hes a great prospect, but really needs to find that KO power, as he wont beat like elite likes of Lesnar, Nogueira and Co. like that. If Rothwell was getting tagged by any other elite fighter, hed of woken up dead

  55. FUMF says:

At the press conference Rua said that the reason he didn’t push it all out at the end is because his corner told him that he was winning. So it is understandable that he wouldn’t try anything risky in case it cost him, what he believed was, his win.

Unfortunately for him Machida’s cornermen were telling Machida the same thing, and in the end they guessed correctly which way the wind was blowing over the judges’ heads.

I actually put the win down to the magic finger dance I did over my long island iced tea at the start of the match when YP rushed to the bog, which even though it was delayed coverage somehow did the time warp thingy and ensured the judges wore the right coloured glasses….

@YP – Tickets were free (company owns a set of boxes at staples)

I must admit that Rua should have won the fight… (after watching the matches again at a buddies house the next day)

I was excited to watch the fights and getting tickets for free was an added bonus, but some free things are just not worth it… almost. First off the box is center court but second floor of box seating. I have seen Lakers, Clippers and Kings games and always enjoyed it… Well UFC is not a venue to watch here.

The view was shitty at best, and to make it even worse the Tv’s in the box were disabled so we couldn’t even watch the matches close up. So our cool seats ended up being duds, i say that if you are not within the first 10-15 rows you wont see much of the match. We did have a good vantage point because you are not blocked by the cage gate but without binoculars all u see are two figures moving around and know who is who by looking at the trunks of fighters because you can’t see any facial features.

I was pretty disappointed but stayed because it included free food and drinks, so in all we mostly partied drank ate and heard the crowd roar…. big night bust. If i paid for the tickets i would have been pretty pissed off.

I guess UFC was making a point. If you want to take a title you have to brawl and knock out the current champion. No good technical game plan that is executed well. No careful playing to the challenger’s strength(s). Just get in there, knock his head off, or go home. I think that makes UFC a bit less interesting, but at least everyone understands the deal now.
