Back to School Edition

Not the Uni Girls but me. I decided I needed to drag my ass back to school to try and nail this Thai reading and writing thing once and for all. Maybe this time I will do it or maybe not but I decided it would help if I gave myself other incentives. The problem with the most of the Schools that teach Thai is – they don’t really feel like a school. They are generally in malls, business buildings or shophouses and are staffed mostly by middle aged Thais. The other students are foreigners from all over but most are well – pretty boring. I will admit though that my first Korean shag in Thailand was handed to me via my second Thai class. Amen.
So I decided this time that I needed to switch it up. I have always told guys who have Thai girlfriends who want to learn English to not let their girl go to AUA. Why? AUA is a mixed campus that has an English Language program and a Thai Language program. So that means guys like me can take Thai courses there and mix in with the girls, it is mostly girls, taking English courses. Great for me but not so great if you are trying to keep your girl on the straight and narrow. I examined some classes yesterday, ate lunch in the canteen and hung out in the courtyard. I saw some cougars, some dolled up bar girls, and 4 Hi-So Honeys flinging themselves out of a BMW to prance over to their TOEFL classes. Let the games begin.
School day 2 – I have analyzed the various segments to hit on :
- Girls in the Service biz being sent to school or trying to better themselves. I.E. – Bargirls. Easy.
- Office girls trying to further their careers through better English. Nice.
- Uni girls taking extra English classes. Awesome. They even dress the part.
- Thai Diaspora. Thai girls who have lived overseas who are back in Thailand – learning Thai. Interesting.
- Older Thai women trying to get ahead. Cougars. Meow.
- Hi So Honeys. Moneyed, dressy and working the hallways. Yummy.
School will be fun.
Ever see guys, knobheads, wearing headphones when they go out partying? Or when they are in a club or a go-go. Well, I remember a few weeks back being in Shark Bar and giving the stink eye to some English teacher looking goon sitting at the rail, rocking out to his headphones while turning around and looking at the punters versus the girls. Headphones were quite enough but his staring at punters over girls was just too much. We kept giving him dirty looks with overtures that we had planned on feeding him his headphones if he did not get a clue but it did not phase him at all.
Anyway. We shared a moment at AUA yesterday as we passed each other in the hallway. Teacher.
Tube8 is toast in Thailand. Bummer.
Be careful going through Saudi Airports:
Please be advised that Saudi Arabia’s airport and custom authorities have the authority to screen all electronic devices carried by arriving and departing foreign passengers. Saudi custom regulations prohibit the carrying of illicit materials into and out of the country.
The following personal electronic devices may be searched for illicit materials: cellular phones, cameras and memory cards, flash disks, external hard drives, laptops/notebooks/PC, iPod, iPod Touch, and MP3 players with memory cards.
All devices with pornographic materials will be confiscated immediately – no fines will be assessed. Individuals refusing to be searched will be detained, deported and black listed by the Saudi Arabian government.
For all those who may have never seen the Famous Nana Preachers – here you go.
More strange news from Thailand – a missing tourist. What is strange is there is no foul play, yet, but he suddenly left the terminal before checking in for his flight. Weird. I won’t make jokes since for sure there is something going on and the family is concerned.
Yet more strange and outlandish stuff. Seems someone is claiming that a song about Thailand was written in a brothel full of children in Pattaya:
‒God of This City,” is a powerfully prophetic song made famous by contemporary worship singer Chris Tomlin. It was humbly birthed in surroundings of pure wickedness and human degradation in a Thai brothel and bar, called The Climax, according to a You Tube video entitled, ‒Chris Tomlin Talks about ‘God of This City’.” It was originally written by a contemporary Irish band called Bluetree, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, as they answered the ‒Macedonian call” given by a Thai bar owner. He invited them to sing in his brothel, amid child slave prostitutes, surrounded in nothing but thick, thick darkness, engaging in activities horrifically unmentionable.
So this bar, The Climax, was supposedly one of those outdoor beer bars near walking street with a live band. I guess their horrific activities were the not child like bargirls winning countless games of connect four. This is just so over the top it is almost funny. Once again – where is the real reporting around this stuff since if it is happening why don’t people find it and expose it? This is ridiculous.
Peace.

i’ve heard of AUA .
good luck with ur hunting, i mean lessons .

The scariest line in this article about the missing student:
“The investigation into Harrie’s disappearance is being led by Bangkok police.”
yikes. If the boys in brown are your best hope of finding a loved one, you’re in dire straits.

as – don’t think it is that bad but what is weird is it seems he chose not to take his flight. strange. if the family is really concerned one would think they would get their own PI to look into it. people do that even in america – land of the “good cops”.

I actually debunked the whole “God of This City” thing on my old blog. The story is now in the TFS2M archive. And Climax was actually indoor and air-con.

“Michael Griffin Harrie, the 29-year-old Auburn University student whose family had reported him missing in Asia, is safe and well in Thailand, his father told CNN Friday. Harrie called his father from the U.S. Embassy in Thailand.”
looks like he’s ok ; just another spacey liberal arts major .

Bringing up a side-issue, is AUA actually any good for learning Thai? Because I heard it was shit for learning English…
The only Thai school I’ve ever tried was Somchart, when it was in Soi 19. Quite a good set-up: cheap, one-to-one tuition but all taking place on lots of tables in a couple of open rooms. All the students took breaks at the same time so you got to mix a bit. The (all-female) teachers also weren’t above asking you what you got up to last night and tended to add the words ‘.. in Soi 4′ to the end of the question.

I dont think they are the Nana preachers, but there are 2 bible bashing cunts who regularly frequent the Subway on Suk23, while I am balloon chasing the 59baht sub of day
On the subject of language, to their credit, they speak pretty fluent Thai, but if your not using it to get more gash, whats the fucking point I ask you
These guys really creep me out. They are always smiling (which is weird) and try and stoke up a conversation with any poor bastard in earshot. 1 of them caught eyes with me and tried to initiate a conversation. I sneered at the prick and he latched on to some other poor cunt.
I have dubbed them ‘Rod & Todd Flanders’

@SSB, if she is in a uniform but older ( or with the attitude, not going to start that debate again…) is she still a cougar?

SSB – Speaking of feeding someone his headphones…
I was at a bar in Jomtian the other night with this cute little stunner. We’re shooting a game of stick and she’s kicking my ass up and down the table. A couple Thai’s are watching and we’re getting a long well with them. Mind you they’re riddled with tattoos and I don’t think I’m going to give them attitude…
What happens this drunk meanders over to our table. He extends his stay in an annoying manner. She goes to shoot and he won’t move. Instead stands there drooling over her… She bends over slightly to shoot (trying to ignore him) I ask him to step away and he grabs her with both hands on the waist and slams his groin into her ass. My girl smacks him and he’s laughing.
I’m standing close enough where i JAB the end of my pool stick into his chest really fucking hard.. and as im about to make my way up to him to smack him one — One of the Thai guy’s hold me back and take care of it for me.
The girl smacks him he’s laughing and within a second the dude is out cold on the floor. The Thai guys beat the fuck out of

Sorry hit the button to early…
The Thai guy’s beat the crap out of him and after he’s laying out they a cop comes strolling over asking what the problem was… lol
My girl translated that If i would’ve done something instead of the Thai’s i’d be needing to get bailed out of jail.
Cop didn’t seem to give a shit about the douche bag bleeding on the floor. I was a little worried about him but – screw em’.
I bought the Thai guy’s a round of drinks and shots. lol
Good to spend time at a bar and get your face familiar with the staff. It can pay off.
But I hear you about wanting to serve some people….

I will be interested in what you say about AUA, as I spent almost a year in their program 5-6 years ago. It is always about the teaching, and the range at AUA is huge. There are some good teachers, but they seem to be passing through; some of the lifers are just awful.
If you hang out in the canteen you will bump into some interesting prospects, but the English and Thai sides of the school do not interact otherwise. It is a good place to meet Japanese, Korean and Chinese quim and I have some fond memories of the listening classes for that reason.
Bring a sharp pencil for the writing stuff, though, as they are stuck in the fine print teaching they all had in Thai schools. Good thing that you are too young for glasses, but AUA reading and writing classes will bring that closer if you are there long.

hey ssb, if you are serious about the reading and writing bit, why not take the year six equivalent test (unless you already did)? it’s usually sometime in december, and preparing for it takes a couple of months (intensive reading and writing every day). they no longer do the silly stuff like drawing stamps with a ruler – it’s supposedly all language now.

I cant have SSB out-doing me on the language front.
I did Thai school before, and while my teacher was good and I liked the school, I had to share a classroom with dunces, cunts and weirdos, so was thinking of going down the CD book route. Any recommendations?
NOT that Andrew Biggs dude. He freaks me out

cboy – it is well known that anytime cops see 2 farangs going at it that they will treat them both the same and as if they are both wrong. that is why all the bars have thai guys around to do the shit kicking. and yes – if a thai kicks a farangs ass – no one seems to care. that is the downside.

prof – every school is about the teacher. the thing I liked about aua is the classes are only an hour and u can take your pick. places like UTL mix the reading and writing together and require at least 3 hours a day plus homework. I dont have the time. aua reading/writing is 1 hour for each level per day 5 days a week. seems doable. right now I have a teacher from udon who is just great. I am eating in the lounge and hanging about. tons of quim. however I am not sure I like the way advanced listening is taught at AUA but maybe I am just not used to it yet.

@Spats – What sweet words you and Biggs share in the sauna, are to be kept between you
I’ve checked youtube for Thai lessons, but seems like most guys do 3-4 videos, get bored and pie it off. Nothing really comprehensive
Learning just from books only get you so far, and hated being slowed down by the dullards in my last class.
The 2 japs and 1 Korean in my last class were polite, industrious, asked very few questions and generally shut-the-fuck up, and had it nailed at the first time of asking.
Same cant be said for the ginger Canadian homo and Israeli paedo who held everyone up with inane questions and would roll in an hour late and boast about the 500baht hooker/rentboy they had last night

A question to the native English speakers here: Do you REALLY understand what the preachers are saying? And… do I miss something?

I downloaded a bit torrent of the Pimsleur Thai course. 30 x 30 minute lessons. It was very good. Only conversation, no books or learning to read.

THEY don’t understand what they’re saying. They can’t answer the simplest of questions about religion.
Tell them his floppy white “scriptures” were written by Paulican maniacs and not God and you get a blank stare. Tell them that the “final edition” as edited by the Council of Nicaea was an arbitrary political document and you get a smirk. Ask ‘em if they’ve read any other books and you get another smirk and the answer that there is no word but the “word of god.”
They have their story and they’re sticking to it.
They believe that Thais worship Buddha images.
The Hindu-Khmer thing is a complete mystery to them.
The odd Thai muckles onto them in hopes of a green card.
Why is the face of orthodoxy and literalism always so ugly?

SSB: Others I know who have studied Thai at AUA complained about the methodology of learning while only listening, without talking and having the benefit of speaking Thai and getting feedback on pronunciation, etc. However, it sounds like the schedule (and female students) suits your needs; and some students like this teaching method.
YP: Interesting comment about the missionaries ability to speak Thai. A few years ago, I ran into some Mormon missionaries in Ubon Ratchathani, who told me they receive intensive foriegn language training for 8 weeks before traveling to thir post.
The Mormon foreign language institute is highly regarded. However, the missionaries told me much of their vocabulary focuses on religion.
These guys do everything together 24/7 for 2 years. Wonder how many gay relationships develop from these missions?

dj – I am just taking the reading writing and so far the teacher and the course is cool. as stated to begin with I am not sure I like there speaking classes either. UTL comes from the mormon offshoot classes and there program is quite good and no focus on religion at all.

In the Rod & Todd relationship, I can clearly see one is the dominant one, and the 4eyed one is more the bitch of couple. I can See Rod giving Todd a few bitchslaps from time to time. Rod is a fat cunt and always orders a footlong, wheras Todd (the bitch) is more conservative and always goes for a 6incher (insert cock joke)
What creeps me out is they always look so fucking happy, and have huge winning smiles slapped across their gourmless faces. If they aren’t getting laid, or consuming copious amounts of cocaine/alcohol, what the fuck do they have to be so happy about?

What unsettled me about the two manic preachers I saw on Soi Cowboy about two years ago was that despite their ostensibly good Thai language skillls they seemed to have a strong Belfast accent. It was like listening to Ian Paisley on helium: Scary…

SSB,
For learning to read & write Pasaa Thai I highly recommend the book “Teach yourself Thai” by David Smyth. Haven’t seen it here ironically, but you can buy it of Amazon and get it shipped from the US or pick it up when you are there.
It’s a thin book that is packed with information- gives you an overview of making small talk but it more useful than the other books I’ve seen. All the Thai skills I have (admittedly not great but I can get by) I’ve picked up from that book, and I’ve only made it halfway though. Get the accompanying CD as well.
Thinking about taking lessons when I have the time.

Last time I saw a nutball preacher was at Summersonic in Tokyo. He was Irish and had the “End is near” sandwich-board and a huge loudspeaker blasting away in Japanese and English. We went another 100 yards down the road and a Japanese punk rocker passed us walking toward the Jesus freak. He had on a “Jesus is a cunt” T-shirt. Would have made a great photo!

SSB I went to Union language School (Ratchatewi) its pretty extreme as its used to teach the Christian Missionaries although its open to all. Its cheap, strict and well managed they know the drill so you will learn if thats the goal. Again its reading writing and speaking passa thai in small groups of about 8. They have a program to get you prepared for the Level 6 exam in November. The system is proven as its one of the oldest Thai language schools in the country and I believe there pass rates are the best. The Christian side is not pushed at all but 50% of the students are raving missionaries :-/
