Elephants, 30k a month & more on the Scams!

Posted by sideshowBOB | Blog, Reader Submissions | Posted on July 7th, 2009

We posted on it yesterday and not much has changed since then. I think most of everything “red light” related is closed today and tomorrow but there are rumors that things get going again tomorrow night. Of course things could be open since this is Thailand and nothing is ever certain. So if you know of stuff open please chime in for the benefit of all. Silom area looks to be open but not sure on Patpong. Cowboy and Nana are to be closed but I think you may find some things open on Soi 4 but not serving. Then again someone could be serving. Mango is closed. All the G Club girls I know say they are off today and tomorrow. I imagine it is the same with the soapies. Saphan Kwai/Suttisan area is closed as well. So there is it is.

Another article on the aiport scam stuff. Frankly I am not sure what is going on. The earlier videos sure looked like stealing to me. So if the issue is a setup then I don’t see it but if it is about how people are being dealt with after stealing – well that is shady territory in any country really. Especially if you are trying to buy your way out of it. I am not saying I know what is going on but either way the noise is not good for Thailand. I don’t understand why that in any situation where foreigners are involved that the Tourist Police are not the lead people to work on it. Seems it might cut out the issues to some extent. Will be interesting to see what happens with all this.

The idea that these holidays are boosting tourism is so absurd given that there is no drinking and most things are shut. Clueless.

So the Red Shirts were prosecuted but frankly I have not heard about anyone doing time so now you have the yellow shirts getting in trouble for the Airport debacle. Interesting – I mean they obviously will chase someone so why not a prominent government figure who happened to speak at the occupation. Somehow I think nothing will happen here but possibly the Dems having to let him go.

Was sent this in from Ajarn.com about someone living on 30k a month. Nice:

With many teaching positions on the ajarn jobs page paying 30,000 baht a month (some even less) forum member Hollow has decided to put things to the test and record his daily spend. Many employers tell us that 30,000 baht a month is enough to live a very comfortable lifestyle – even in Bangkok. I’ve heard Thai people describe that kind of dough as ‘luxury’ Then again perhaps that’s a load of old tosh. So does 30K a month enable you to lord it up right until the last day of the month or are you going to be stumbling through the final week on a diet of pot noodles and tap water? OK Hollow. Pencil? Notebook? Let’s begin.

A friend of mine has been cruising Date in Asia and noticed quite a few ladyboys from Bangkok. He mentioned this to Young Penfold one day and YP said to send them his way. So when he chatted with one the other day he sent “her” YP’s profile link. This was the response:

“Just tell hime,i know him along time, and i use to sleep in his room before ++

“Hahahahahaha”

There you have it.

Noticed the video from CNN about Soi 4? Well it was not about the bars but the elephants. At least it was not BBC trying to make a case between elephant hunger and child prostitution. I had always thought the handlers brought the elephants into town to help pay for them. This video makes it sound like they purposefully raise the elephants to make money on the streets. People in the Surin area, where most of the chang come from, have always told me they cannot afford the elephants anymore so they come to Bangkok to beg and help pay for them. For sure this is a problem and the government should be doing more than they are for the sake of the elephants since they don’t look happy cruising down lower suk and it always fucks traffic up.

I think the elephants have fun taking all those snacks from tourists.

What they don’t enjoy is being chained up on some hot, deserted, empty lot 20 hours a day.
A symbol of Thailand, it’s such a shame shameful to exploit them.
If the Police really wanted them off the streets, it would be done in an instant.
For sure they are taking a piece of the action.

c – only helps if they are open under me buddy

jj – yes. it sucks for them. I dont see the police being the facilitators of all things that ail bkk. the reality is this is a social issue. thailand has elephants and it is the poor who own them. there is a special force for this and I have talked to them once before. there is no money for them. this video highlights that team yellow is financing the buying of elephants to take them off the streets. this seems smarter than punishing the handlers unless there are perpetually doing this to make money. could be that some are. again I feel bad for the elephants.

I have heard that the police don’t know what to do with the elephants if they arrest the mahouts, and that might make sense.

There was a plan a few years ago to hire them to patrol national parks, where at least they would get enough to eat. In the city they starve for lack of food.

Paying to get 100 off the streets of Bangkok will clear the way for the next 100 to come in

  5. sideshowBOB says:

prof – u arrest the mahout and what happens to the elephant? somehow systematically dealing with the issue of why this happens and to prevent it would be the only way. but this is thailand – the social ills of poverty and farmers/mahouts being left behind is a big problem. elephants roaming the streets is just a symptom IMHO and one the police are un equipped to deal with.

Those big elephants scare the piss out of me. Im guessing most people have seen clips from the trashy TV shows ‘When Animal Attack’ and seen elephants and shit tearing down the street, and trampling peoples faces into the ground.

Purely a guess, but maybe they are too weak/hungry, or out of their massive faces on drugs for them to muster the energy to do it?

On the subject of 30k a month, for your average Joe SomTam, thats a fair bit of wedge. An ex GF of a good friend of mine worked an entry level position for BangkokBank and she was chuffed with her 14k a month. I spent a darling evening last week tonsil fucking the bejesus out of a call-centre girl who brings in 12k From what Ive read, a 7/11 worker gets around 8-9k a month, so 30k in the scheme of things isn’t too shabby at all for Thai standards

However………30k a month slices down to 7.5k a week or call it 1000baht a day. Even if you eat 3 meals of streetfood a day, thats 150baht. Your gonna need to get too and from work – taxis/motosai/MRT/BTS you could say maybe another 100-200 baht. So 300 or so baht of that 1000 has gone already. Then factor in rent, bills, toiletries, going out on the piss, maybe a monthly soapie, going shopping etc etc and the fact if your working a teaching job you probably wont have a work permit, so will have to pony up for visa runs too.

Thing is with Bangkok, I could earn 250,000 baht a month, and that still wouldn’t be enough

Re the shop lifting couple, my take is having seen the video footage (assuming they do not dispute it was them) is that she stole but at that point the video evidience was not in the public domain.

They knew they were guilty and paid their way out possibly due to fear of the consequences, but then for some unknown reason decided to take it to the UK press on the basis that they had paperwork saying they were not guilty.

They only reason they were given that paperwork was they had paid their way out of the charges.

Now the video footage has been released I am surprised more people are not backing down with all their slagging off of all that is Thai in this matter.

They stole and rather than leave with their tails between their legs they decided to make an issue not realising that the video would be released. Maybe they saw financial gain to be made ala the beer mat stealing bird from Australia.

The problem for the Thais is that obviously someone is preying on the shoplifters to make financial gain rather than process them through the proper channels. FFS, if it was being dealt with officially they would not be put up at some love hotel out of the way.

I don’t reckon King Power are involved but think all the shenanigans goes on after they have made the report/allegation of shop lifting.

So hopefully the Thais will put an end to the extortion (bad publicity) although if processed properly do not be surprised to see people being locked up in the Hilton for life for stealing a wallet (also bad publicity).

I’m no pachydermologist (and no, that doesn’t mean “katoey gynecologist”) but I know a coupla things about elephants:

Average daily sustenance for an adult elephant is about 200 kilograms of jungle-type food daily. You think they get anywhere near that much in an urban environment? The chang-noi variety don’t need as much, but it’s still more than they get. What drug would be chosen as an appetite-suppressant in Thailand?

You guessed it. Of course they’re YB’d up.

One other thing: elephants live as long as humans, so traditionally the mahout stays with the animal for life if it’s to work. I don’t know how widespread this custom is, but when you consider that it’s a relatively intelligent animal with substantial nutrition needs, just because it can be domesticated doesn’t mean it should be brought into urban areas to be dazzled by neon.

Hell, we’re there because we WANT to be, and we know what we’re doing. Or at least, we think we know what we’re doing. Half the time, anyway. Okay, a third.

@Datou: love yr icon! If you wanna hit some katoey bung, go for it. You might want to ask YP to discern which ones have “dangling participles” though, if that’s an issue for you. Be nice and don’t forget to glove up.

    @JD – Apologies…. That should have read “teaching in a 30k a month teaching job……”

I think English teachers in BKK have quite a bad rep, as I know quite a few respectable guys that work for decent schools, and pull in very decent coin here.

However these guys are far outweighed by the fuckstains you tend to see on the visa-runs and have the misfortune to come across on a daily basis out here.

Yet again on the cash front, I think if you have TOO MUCH in Bangkok, it can fuck you up, depending on your circumstances. If your a single guy with minimal overheads, the nightly boozing, endless amount of chicks, drugs and debauchery available on-tap, can send you into a spin if you have no financial boundaries.

I reckon in and about 100,000b for a single dude is a happy medium. Not too much that you lose control, but enough that you can have a comfortable living.

Think your so way off their its laughable.

Bargirl style housing are 3-4k a month rooms, even less. With 100k you can easily stretch to 10-25k a month plus for accomodation, which in BKK can get you some nice digs.

Drop 20-25k on accommodation and you still have 75k for the month, or a shade under 20,000 a week to play with.

Maybe you have to rely purely on cash to get laid? I know a number of guys here that make under 100k a month (including myself) and live in decent places and get plenty of decent ass

depends what you mean by “nice digs” i guess. for me, it’s gotta be upper sukhumvit, chidlom or sathorn. two bedrooms. an actual kitchen. a balcony that you can actually sit on. a pool that you can swim in. no indians. parking. new. think the lakes, athenee residence, or the park chidom. that will easily run you 50,000 for a small one bedroom, assuming you’re renting.

it’s not what you need to get laid. bar girls, coyotoes, and uni girls from just off the farm at ramkhamhaeng are impressed with much less, of course.

If you are pulling real hi-so or the girl from channel 3 you need a real place. Or you are lucky that she does not mind taking you to hers.

No indians. Thats funny. I am in a proper building but it is full of indians, thai movie stars and a few mia nois of rich folks. Does this building not count?

Funny u touch on the uni girl thing – have a post brewing about that pet peeve of mine.

Granted, if you were rolling in a 200,000 a month super-suite, it makes it way easier to seal the deal, however I have NEVER (even back when I was staying in a 7k a month room on suk 22) had a girl turn me down based on where I lived, and before you jump in, Im not talking toothless bargirls or ‘uni’ girls asking for 1500baht taxi money in the morning

LMAO, I did enjoy the testosterone hose down on this thread between GS and YP.
However, like a few others i’m also in agreement with YP.
    I understand that a reasonable amount of presentation is something some people feel they need to do;
    1) King dick swank pad.
    2) Prominant Fashion cloth adorning their torso.
    3) Flashing a shiny Amex Platinum or a Coutts Platinum, or instead a Fatboy wallet with the leather sides straining under the way too much cash needed for a night out.
    4) And speaking in a superior manner.

All of the above designed to impress some hi-so bitch that thinks she’s reached the echelons of the sex industry!

Personally i’ve found that with my “not so bad looks” with all my own hair and teeth, a reasonable budget and a reasonable place to live – i’ve had some great nights deep mining my way into a cute FL.

Just like any other comodity on this planet, there reaches a point where “value for money” or “is she worth” will enter any mans thoughts.
I won’t pay more than 3k THB for LT, no matter how fucking hot she looks, there are just too many other hunnies out there just as hot that won’t be asking you for their monthly housing rent for a one off ST/ LT!

I pull in 660k THB per month, 220K of this goes into taxes. (Too bad I still have to deal with double pricing and visa renewals, the ungrateful fucking smilers). Give the wife 35k per month to pay for her car and incidentals. Own the condo in BKK so the monthly payments are: 4 k maintenance fees, 1.5k electricity, 1.5k cable, 1k high speed internet, 100 baht phone and 100 baht for water- or about 8k a month. Spend 15k a month on groceries at the emporium, I like my farang food and maybe another 10k a month going out to eat. 20k a month on local travelling and misc bullshit.

The remaining 350k a month goes into savings so I can enjoy NOT working 14 hours a day and pulling like crazy. Not like getting older makes you any less attractive here.

The BOI rates refer to the corporate tax rates the company pays, and usually there is no tax for the first few years, corporate wise.

For individuals they all have to pay tax- all my staff included. I don’t know how to get around that except to get paid offshore – and only partially as if you don’t some pay and tax taken out on shore- no work permit.

Only person I know who doesn’t pay tax is the #1 if you know what I mean. Apparently his company generates $160 Million USD a year but they don’t pay a satang in taxes. Amazing isn’t it?

The expats there are taxed at a 15% flat rate (which doesn’t help much if you’re from the US and earn a decent salary).

I usually do this if I have a pre-planned trip to Cascades around the corner, and am needing to look my best

Weetabix and wholemeal bread is how I keep my carbo game strong, moo krataa, grilled chicken etc is how I keep the protein levels high. If your a veggie, I recommend you should eat a lot of teenage cunt/ass as they have high protein content.

I train with SSB 3-4times a week (Iworkout he looks in the mirror blowing kisses at himself) and he will vouch that nothing untoward happens in the showers (that often)

On a serious note, if you want some PT ow what have you, get in touch via http://www.bigmangobar.com/about/

    YP,

I will think about contacting you through SSB for some PT. No shower time with this though…

9% bodyfat is pretty good- I was that level 9 years ago when I was hiking and mountain climbing like a mad dog. Unfortunately living here and commuting in a car in the cunty traffic 3-4 hours a day + 12 hours at the plant leads to an unhealthy lifestyle- must be around 18% body fat now. Am 6′ 2″ and was 78 kg at my fighting weight, and am now up to 90 kg. Same strength as before but fat added. It sucks!

Living in Thailand is just plain unhealthy.
