April was a great month and we appreciate all the biz! Thanks again. Wow.The fight yesterday. I was hoping for a few more rounds but Manny is well – explosive. Bummer to the Hatton fans who I am sure were also expecting the fight to go a little longer. Anyway. Fun stuff.
The whole Tom & Dee phenomenon is baffling to me. Some recent evening trips out to JJ Market and Central Lat Phrao have floored me with some stunning Thai girls being escorted around by their baggy pants tomboys. What is it with that scene? Here is a serious over analyzation of it all:
Tom and Dee are, according to Sinnott (author also of Toms and Dees: Transgender Identity and Female Same-Sex Relationships in Thailand [Hawaii, 2004], English words (tom from “tomboy” and dee from “lady”) that made their way into Thai culture sometime in the 1970s. Both in Thai society generally among among toms and dees themselves, “Tom and dee subject categories are not defined in terms of heterosexual/homosexual binary; they are not defined in opposition to heterosexuality,” Sinnott declares (134), which isn’t surprising since most heterosexuals do not think of themselves as heterosexuals; they tend to identify as men and women, with men assumed to be butch/penetrators and women assumed to be femme/penetrated, unless something goes awry.
Heavy stuff.
Okay – if this does not scare you about keeping your money in Thai government based banks then I don’t know what will. This is just nuts. A few million baht over many years I could somehow see happening, but this is just a stunning amount of money. Word is that the laws around this type of crime are really fucked up and the most time this guy will do is 5 years and if he has hidden the money overseas then the bank may never recover it. The theory being is the guy does his 5 years and then goes to get his money and lives happily ever after. Sick.
Speaking of banks – it did not take long for this ATM debacle to raise some ire. For sure this is not good for tourism especially if the reasons the banks are raising the fees are bogus. I am still not clear on the rules since not all banks are doing it and sometimes they charge it and sometimes they don’t. It is also only suppose to be on credit cards as well but the credit card companies are saying it is bogus. Seems just like simple highway robbery to me.
Piracy is rampant in Thailand and given how graft permeates every level of government and police – I am just laughing that they think they can go after pirated goods. However that is the plan but already you can see how half assed it is:
The government is pushing forward laws to penalise the buyers and users of pirated products and the commercial building landlords who ignore tenants who sell pirated goods.
What I found hilarious is the notion that they are going to get landlords – but check the fine print there since they say commercial buildings. Well Patpong is the street and along with lower Sukhumvit those people selling the copy goods generally pay money for rent to the BMA – the government org that owns the streets. So I am assuming the government won’t be fining the government which means the trade should go on unabated. Also notice that they leave out many of the Thai oriented places like the stands around Central Lat Phroa and of course Fortune Town. I don’t see much changing on this front for a very long time. MBK and Pantip seem the easy first targets.
I have not stepped in Nana in a few weeks. Been to cowboy a couple of times for a few drinks – the busier of the 2 right now. We have been in and out of Patpong a bit but frankly the talent is really lacking. About the only place with girls and a decent vibe has been the Pink Panther but the last trip there we got blindly ripped off. There were 3 of us with 3 bins. I had a drink or two and my buddy had the same plus some lady drinks. The 3rd buddy had drinks, ladydrinks and a barfine. We all paid separately but the service girl, like a dummy, collated the bills together. I paid with a 500 and got my change. 2nd guy paid with a 1000 and got his change. 3rd guy paid with 2000 and got no change. His bill was like 1500 on the nose I think. We all saw him pay with 2k.
Then nothing happened. They just assumed we would not notice but we did. So we asked and the service girl went back to the cashier and she said he paid with 1500. He did not. He had no 500 bills and he wanted the change anyway. My guess is the service girl fucked up and the cashier took advantage of it. The mamasan in all her brilliance said she did not see anything therefore we were wrong. Some logic there.
Basically they did not care and we came up empty. This is a frustrating situation since there is really nothing you can do about it. No one to seek help from and boycotting the bar will have no effect. It sucks. Plain and simple.
Hoping to explore the Or Tor Kor area soon. Just fyi – trip reports will follow.
With the Cboy post on Q – I think it brings up some interesting opinions but at the end of the day there are not too many clubs that are foreigner friendly where guys can roll into, have a good time and possible pick up on normal girls but many times are talking to hookers but they don’t know it. Q bar and Bed both thrive because they are really the only well known options and offer a more club like experience than Thai clubs – which are not very club like. So by default they do more than okay and given how hard it is to start new clubs – I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

I went to Toy Bar with an ex-bargirl currently sponsored uni-student friend of mine and a “Tom” friend of hers. I’d just been roped into helping the ex-bg move room, as had the Tom, and the ex-bg was treating us to a few beers in her old place of work as a thank you.

Too bad about the 500 THB rip off. Before going out to night life areas I always make sure I have ample small notes. I never pay for a bill with more than a 100 THB difference in change. If you only have 500 and 1000 THB notes from the ATM then go to a 7-11 and buy a pack of gum with a 1000THB and get proper change. Yes this takes a bit of planning but in doing so it’s impossible to get ripped off like you described.

funny you mentioned tom and dee. i’ve noticed them in passing every once in a while over the past few years, but they’ve been crawling out of the woodwork over the past week or so. an absolutely stunning dee sat down next to my girl and me a few days ago during dinner, soon followe by the tom, who was the spitting image of Alfalfa but with horn rimmed glasses.

A thai guy I know (our balls never touched. Not once) used to hang out there and said there are some cool straight and a few funky gay bars, which were frequented by smoking hot, young cunt-eating dees and toms, and young chicks on the hunt for dick. Very young funky crowd, so evening slacks and quality fabrics wont fly here.

I have been friendly with two “Dees” over the years:
The first one quit after a succession of Butch Tom motorcycle taxi driver girlfriends and decided to get married (to an abusive male motorcycle taxi driver) and have kids.
The other, more recently, quite carpet munching and is now in the market for Farang boyfriends – and going through quite a few by all accounts.

The point (that I neglected to mention above) is that of the only two Dees I’ve known, they’ve both eventually come over from the ‘Dark side’. Whilst all the Toms are chasing pussy.

Or Tor Kor is quite okay, been there twice last year. I don’t remember the names. There was this small venue playing quality Thai indie rock which I liked a lot. I am not really into indie rock but for some reason I like the indie look on asian girls
. The rest of the venues I’ve been to were usual Thai clubs with bad hip-hop and a very young crowd. I was the only Farang there both times I went. There was a tiny stand with a guy making a delicious khao kai jiao behind the indie club.

As for the “dee” thing…one of my faves was this gal from Roi-et and after we’d fucked enough that we had gotten past the no-bullshit stage, she told me she’d been a dee for a year. I was intrigued and asked her about it, no mention of social status or whatever, she was younger and it seemed to suit. Personally I think she just liked the sex. A fun gal and an orgasm-addict. I like that Ye Olde English gangsta-script, and “FUCK OFF” is more appropriate than “EAST SIDE LOS” (ask El Cochino Wetback what that means, and a big shout out to ECW, hope yr keeping those goth/black metal Thai ladies busy). There was a wench rubbing chrome off a pole on Cowboy years back who had “UP TO YOU” tattooed vertically on her spine in that lettering. That’s still one of my faves.
I wish I could find the KVD article, thought I’d saved a copy…yr assessment is correct, but while her work would have been considered extreme in the past, it’s now considered less “freakshow” and more “talk-to-my-publicist”…I like it, but I still prefer the dedicated-Japanese-bodysuit: looks so nice on Asian skin, and if done by hand we’re talking 10-12 years for completion.
Not the sort of thing the 100-baht masters are cranking out. Every time I see some sunburnt guy with Thai letters tattooed (some get them on their bald skulls…such intelligence can only be pondered by us humans, not fully understood) I wonder: did the tattoo guy resist the temptation to spell out “wanker” and tell the guy it means “valiant warrior”?
