Flood info….

The best advice of all.........

For those people that are intending to come to Thailand in a few weeks, I thought I’d post this link that was sent to me by Spats.  – Thanks.

If anyone has anything to share – please do so.
http://www.thaitravelblogs.com/2011/10/essential-thaiflood-information-for-foreign-tourists-in-thailand

The only tip I can share is that to save water – drink beer.  We have some specials on at the Mango.. ;)     oh, and dead cats are a good alternative to sandbags.

The new Honda Wave?

The government has declared a holiday 27 Oct – 1 Nov which is when they are expecting some extra flooding due to the high tides. Its unlikely the situation is going to improve in the next two weeks.

My international disaster spidey sense is not signalling good news to me right now. The most sobering (pun intended) bit was in a BKK Post story that the army is setting up field posts to protect royal palaces in Bangkok. The Thai army might not be the greatest fighting force since the Army of Northern Virginia, but they know who butters their bread so if they’re worried I’m worried.

Hoping for the best, but getting concerned . . .

Time to make a trip down to Phuket. Here its, high and dry, sunny and warm. I’m going for a swim today. (still i miss the good times at the Mango)

anyone know if the rail is running from the airport? also is patts accessible or is that road closed… i seem to remember it running thru low lying farm land…

Hard to believe 1/3 Thailand under water, sucks big time for the farmers.

  6. Werewolf says:

    Cam:

Patts is open and operating. I doubt that the elevated road there will be flooded (though you still have to make it to the on-ramp).

Airport rail is running, as are BTS & MRT. (At Sam Yan station the other day, they had the huge metal flood doors closed on the MRT entrance from Chamchuri Square shopping center… so the MRT is being cautious).

Sukhumvit area at the moment looks very normal, except for the sandbags stacked everywhere.

The Chao Phraya river will probably start overrunning its banks in the next day or two, but soi 4 is pretty far from the river.

There’s a lot of water coming this way, but unless you live or work north of Lad Phrao, it’s not here yet.

Penfod – Have we ever ‘lived or worked’ north of Lad Phrao? I seem to recall that name for some reason.

    - Isn’t that where ‘Splatter-box’ lives?

Not looking good chaps. This weekend will probably be the decider if people are still going to venture in to BKK for the beginning of November.

pmmp and I are hardcore, so we’ll be there anyway.

  9. Daywalker says:

According to websites and news channels, Bangkok is like YP’s underpants – should be avoided at all costs.

If anyone can give us folk who are planning on coming in this week a little heads up on the lower Suk area, it’d be appreciated.

A few people have cancelled so far., to the amazement of Jonas who swims to work each day with a smile on his face.

Is it as bad as they say it is, or should people just harden the fuck up?

count me in too, who needs to be drinking fresh water anyway? And I stopped bothering to shower while in Thailand a few years back, taking a dip in the pool or in this recently developed situation stroll down the MM! Come on YP you little pussy bitch…

  11. pmmp says:

Airport is dry. There are reverse osmosis water dispensers all over, like right by Swan 1 on Soi 4, and Lower Suk is dry. Flooding to the west of Sathorn/Silom but it hasn’t hit central bkk yet. Trains are operational. Don’t be a poof Floodwalker. I’m coming in and I’d better see my older brother there.

  12. Daywalker says:

The flood is not an issue for me. I’ve been walking on water for years.

    So we have…. (coming in)

    pmmp
    DW
    nR
    Cam
    The Lurcher
    SJW ?
    YP – cancelled (homo)
    Rick Masters – Dec
ROLLN – Deciding after the weekend (sensible)

Who else is joining us? Remember, Friday night we need to go and claim the girls for the Saturday par-taaay.

  13. Rick Masters says:

Can’t make it this Nov, have to settle for Dec instead. I’m envious through, with the crowd flying in it sounds like a blast. YP’s been waiting a year for this moment so I don’t think an issue like BKK being half underwater will sway his decision (Cascades IS on the 2nd floor).

  14. rolln says:

@ YP,,, you cancelled already? I thought you were gonna sit on your hands till tuesday?

Well I’m supposed to get in the 10th but the thais I’m working for just postponed my gig from the 18th till the 26th, which I can’t do. There goes the free trip. So I don’t mind paying or getting wet but will the party experience be diminished? Will patts still be full of refugees? I’m gonna wait till tuesday to call it.

  15. nurseRon says:

oh come on boyz? If BKK sucks how fucking far is it to somewhere that does not suck? Further more, even as fucked up as things have become Thailand is still way more fun than home, or TJ? I too can walk on water in short bursts, how about you Mr rolln?

  16. nurseRon says:

@YP; there is still time to re-book??? as the wise Rick Masters has pointed out, Cascade is on the 2nd floor and aint no fucking way soi4 is getting hit with 3-4 meters unless the end is upon us!
    cheers!!!

I have been known to run on water, freeways & across rooftops but at the moment I’m only 10 days in recovering from an apendectomy, so hardcore rolln hasn’t shown up for work just yet. But I’m not giving in, I still really want this nov thing to happen, and I rarely do the sensible thing.

YP, just to let you know, we’ll be barfining some LB’s just for you. Once the bar fine is paid, we’ll tell them sod off home as the little oik who calles himself ‘youngun’ was too scared to dip his toes in the water.

@ rolln; Hmm, something I know a little about? If you didn’t perf. and it was a lap, you should be fine! And if your 3 new holes do become dis-approximated, I’ll bring some steri strips and super glue and you’ll be right as rain!
BTW you should be done with your antibiotics by now so substances should also be a go!

Yeah, looks like he YPoof’d out. I thought watching the Cain-JDS and Rua-Hendu events with the boys would have made it an easy call. Cascades being on the top floor is a better argument of course. Bros, hoes with hoses, and the mma. Let’s take a moment and say a prayer for the little manchild as it will be tough on him. Oh well, maybe January. Be strong ya little trysexual.

  23. Werewolf says:

Yes, it will be a Penfold-less November.

DW: Since you asked, the story is that the Bangkok “danger” time of 6 pm Saturday (wall of water from north meets high tides) seems to have passed without any new inundations, aside from Lad Phrao and Suk Soi 50. The flood defenses have held; Sukhumvit in general, and Soi 4 in particular, are indeed, as dry as a bone.

The PM announced today that the situation should start improving after Monday, as the high tide recedes and the water coming south becomes less than the water being drained into the ocean.

This in no way minimizes the damage to the areas that have been flooded, but it seems that inner Bangkok has been spared thanks to the flood defenses constructed post-1983, and the insistence of the BMA governor who refused to open the flood gates to Bangkok, insuring that others would be swimming in their living rooms while my shoes stayed dry.

I will be flying though BKK in about two weeks no matter what. It’s partly bidness related, so if international flights are flying I’ll be there. However, I probably won’t stay long if the boys aren’t back in town. That said, one of the advantages of being nearly a local these days (Emirates flies a cheap round trip every day using an A380) is I can improvise a bit.

Sad to see BJ Penn go out like that. A year and a half ago you’d have thought this was his division for a long, long time.

I’ve stayed at a few places on soi Rang Nam, easy access to BTS, many many great food venues! Can be a Pain in the ass to taxi to and from Lower Suk if after midnight/before 6am. Good place to stay if your with a girl and your not out drinking and whoring!

Never stayed in Silom or Sathorn, traffic nightmares are common as I’m told?
Lots of nice places to stay at in Thong Lo.
Suk soi 16, 18, and 20-ish area is a favorite for me, since you’ve got some killer restaurants on soi 16 & 18, Food land, Long Table and the Green Parrot Cafe (great coffee) mid way down soi 16. Easy walking distance to Cowboy and Asoke BTS & MRT, and the view of the Milenium Towers! Nice little 3.5 star Hotel I like on soi 18 is the Darjelling boutique. http://darjellingboutique.com at around 1200 a night is a good deal for that area.
    Hope this helps?
    cheers!!!

I stayed in Silom/Sathorn a couple of times (back when my job got me a sweet deal at a really nice place), and the transport isn’t that bad. You’re usually close to either Lumpini MRT or Silom BTS. Also, in spite of what Daywalker says, sometimes its nice NOT to be spitting distance to Nana when you’re in BKK.

Since my job has no longer provided the corporate rate hookup I’ve usually stayed somewhere off of Sukh. Dream BKK is on Soi 15, as close to the action as anyone needs to be, and they are hurting for customers. Their prices on Agoda are often sinfully low. Also, if you don’t want to get treated like a second class Agoda citizen you can call the front desk and tell them, ‘I see this price on Agoda, will you match it?’ and they usually will. I don’t know about ‘girl friendly’ but considering what I’ve done before, during, and after staying there without anyone lifting an eyebrow I think you’ll be fine. I’ve also heard good things about the President Palace and Citichic.

@Cam- You should try The ‘Seven’ Hotel on Sukhumvit 31. According to Scampering Jack Wilshere, they have a very laissez-faire attitude towards guests with opiate and rentboy fetishes. Dunno how hed know that though. Breakfast is meant to be killer aswell.

@cam Don’t know the others but I stayed at the Nantra -De Comfort in Thong lo. Good hotel , clean , good size rooms. Located about 1 klm from Thong lo BTS. Taxi drivers generally don’t have a clue about it whereabouts as it’s down an alley.
Don’t know about the guest-friendliness of the place. i suspect they allow it and there is a karaoke bar next door that caters to faramgs as well as the Nips.
Wifi Internet in my room didn’t work though and the breakfast is the most basic you can get. All in all good value for 1000 baht though. Hope that helps!
